  • Protein Shake, When?

Hi, i'm new here, got here via a search on google!
I have just started training...working out, trying to build muscle.
I was wondering at what time should i tak my protein shake?
Is it before a workout, or after..or both?
I really have no clue, and neither do my friends...
Will be glad of any help!

I no longer take a protein shake. I had them for a year and, to be honest, they didn't make too much difference.

But I do take half a litre of skimmed milk, with three heaped table spos of dried skimmed milk mixed in. I take it an hour before weights, as well as immediately after training. I honestly feel that first one keeps me going in the gym, and the second aids a quicker and more thorough recovery.

If you do want to continue with the shakes, buy in bulk. I saved almost 50% on the ordinary tub price by getting a 5 kilo box.

Really, that milk thing works, so you have half a litre before yuor work out, and half a litre after, and that helps build muscle as well as keeping your performance sustained?

I take a shake early in the morning, before breakfast, to stop the katabole process, then i take one at lunchtime and one in the evening before bed. After training i take recoveryshakes, with a 60% karbs and 40% protein (roughly..), that gives me a quite nice restitution phase. I would recommend proteinshakes if you are a student like me.. or if you just don't get enough proteins pr day. If you train weights and martial arts i would recommend 1.5-2.5g's pr kg of bodyweight (your bodyweight - your bodyweight*fat-precent)... for me that is about 180-220g of protein pr day, and that is hard to achieve without eating a lot or doing shakes.

so proteinshakes and creatine.. go for it..

well in my limited experience i found that within 90 minutes after your workout is best but you can take protein any time of day and it will help you in much the same way.

Your right. After working out is the window of opportunity. Your body will use the protein extremely well. Other than that, take it whenever. I take a large bottle to work and drink half for morning break and half for afternoon. It has more than protien in it though. I mix oats in for carbs too.
