  • Need Speed!!!(Not the drug)

I am so freakin slow. I need to get faster at running but I don't know how. I've tried just running alot but that just builds stamina. I also need to get a higher vertical jump but nothing seems to be working for that either. Please shine some light on me.

Do some 100 metre dashes or wind sprints. You might need a stopwatch, but it will make you faster.

Go to www.google.com (or any search engine for that matter)and type in: "HIIT Training" (without the quotes). HIIT stands for High Intensive Interval Training.
Let us know how you're doing in a few weeks.

Could you give a brief summary of what that is?

Very brief: Doing an exercise routine not at a constant intensity or speed but as the name implies at intervals of moderate intensity followed by intervals of high intensity. Example: Jog for 20 seconds and then Sprint for 10 seconds. Repeat this Jog/Sprint combo like 5 times. Gradually increase the combo to 6 times, 7 times, 8 times,...nth times.

i would reccomend instead of trying to push to increase speed. keep your control and increase gradually until youre at a speed you are comfortable with that challenges you. jump roping on one foot is good for jumping. it makes me light on my feet

It was more developed to get a good cardio workout and burn calories yes, but it has the added bonus of increasing speed. But I would still do some 100 metre dashes and or wind sprints. They increase speed quite a bit.

For jumps...try jumping from a squat wearing leg weights onto the top of a milk crate and then landing on the crate in a squat...then progress untill you can do thid on three milk crates my first wing chun instructor showed me this and it works a treat..

also train your reflexes when its time to move react as fast as you can that means your moving quicker than others ...eg when at traffic lights dont burn off but insure you car is the first moving when the lights change

then combine that with the strenght generated by the explosive weight training and blow the competition away

pd generating more speed generaly means there is more force actioning in the movement its up to you to direct this energy

If you want to be able to run long distances what do you do. You practice long distances. If you want to be able to shoot a good free throw what do you do you practice shooting free throws. It is the same with jumping if you want to jump high practice jumping as high as you can. If you want to run fast then don't run long distances practice running as fast as you can.

play soccer. that'll give you break neck speed as you are constantly changing directions while totally exhausted. Basketball is good for that as well. HIIT training is your best bet dude. So far I have not found much better than that. Here is a good jump exercise.

stand up straight, feet shoulder width apart. now squat like your sitting in a chair. just as your thighs become parrallel to the floor stop and hold for 4 seconds and then explode jumping straight up as high as you can then repeat. that is fun. also do some split jumps is what I think they are called. get into lunge position and jump switching your front leg for the back and do that a few times. your legs will feel like crap after that lol. enjoy.
