  • Weights and punch?

Ok I heard that while holding a weight and punching over and over with it that it will make your punching movement more powerful. So what is the tempo of the punches and how should they be executed? I mean do you fully extend the arm and then snap it or what?

You are likely to damage yourself doing this. It is totally unnatural and doesn't even apply any force in the direction you need to.

Practice punching to get a better punch, and other forms of exercise to improve the potential power your body can develop. Weight training can help with size, speed and strength. Callisthenics are good also.

But don't punch with a weight unless you really really hate your elbows.

You can practice your Shadows with little little weight. But simply do not strike hardly. Good for Endurance Gain.

      Good luck.

finding your punching power comes from practice and self control, adding wieght doesnt work like it does with a bicept or ____ <--add muscle

snapping your elbow causes hyper extension...which is not good...like thai said, ur elbows will be gone in no time... i know alot of instructors tell you to do this b/c it helps you to feel power in a punch, but it isnt neccessary...

practice beating the crap out of a bag...

          peace

Punching with a weight... I know some people who have done that because they saw it in Dragon Ball Z, but be careful what you see on TV. It's in the best interest to inquire about these types of things before you just go ahead and do it. I'm not insinuating that you got this idea from DBZ, but just to say watch what you attempt.

              Aerobic Use of Hand-Weights

Punching with hand-weights can be risky, but I’ve used them while jogging, swinging the weights in the natural arcs of the arms motion not any punching motion. However, I’m always cautious not to let the arm fully extend at the end of a swing and keep the elbows tucked in and moving in the same plane as the rest of arm. If you try this remember the longer the run the smaller the weight.

the problem is that people who do punch while weighted tend not to do it slow. You have to do it slow and never lock your elbows. I'm not entirely sure if it does help with the punch either.

if you wanna practice punching while holding hand weights you are best to more practice the motion of the punch more than performing an actual punch, like just go through the motions slowly to help build up muscles use by the arms while performing the movements to help increase strength and speed. But don't do it fast or till your arm is straight.
