  • What is a good middle-ground then?

For the most part, I thought that many MAs feel that training with weights is a big no-no. When I was studying Shaolin Goju, I kept lifting weights because I was in the Marines also and I wanted to be able to pass my Physical Fitness Tests without much problems (even though I did anyway because I hated running back then about as much as I do know).

Anyhow, as I've read here, there are some who feel that BW is the only way to go and others who feel that weightlifting is good too.

The reason why I'm looking into this is because of the fact that I intend to begin training again and I want to be in great shape before I get there.

Do both of them. I use low reps when doiong weights, and high rep for bodyweights. Bodyweight helps you control ur own body better, and should be used to develop a nice fitness base. Currently I'm working on the Push Press, Deadlift, Bent Over Row, Chinups, and Burpees. Pick a core group of exercises and work on them, or you can try www.crossfit.com.
