  • ninjitsu and body weight over weights?

first of all id like to start learning ninjistu at home does anyone know any sites i can learn the basics from?

second question as well as martial arts i enjoy body building problem is im no good at lifting my own body weight..........so id like to do more body weight exercise......problem with that is will that effect my muscle gain? is body weight a substitute for lifting?

If someone could reply pretty soon it would appreciated as i wanna put it to practice. cheers all

There probably is a teacher near you that you could learn from. Where do you live at?

It can be, depending on how you do them. If you just do tons and tons of pushups in a row, you're training for strength-endurance over growth. If you want to add size and overall strength, do one-legged squats and one-arm pushups with max body tension, a few reps here and there throughout the day. If you want explosive strength, do jumping squats, clapping pushups, broad jumps, and the like.

How do these work for you?

          England : South

          London

          Alliance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, London
Gracie Barra Academy - Piccadilly Circus, London

Braziilian Top Team BJJ - London, also Milton Keynes, Slough

Rio Grappling Club UK - London
Electic Combat System - Bellingham, London
          Pancrase London - London
Tokei Olympic Wrestling Club - London Bridge
Top Wrestling Academy - Canada Water, London
Bob Breen's Academy - Hoxton, London
Self Protection Association - Palmers Green, London

Crawley Down MMA - Crawley, Greater London
          HSD Combat - Harrow, Middlesex

These places will teach you to fight and survive, as well. They aren't "ninjutsu", but then, do you want to learn ninjutus, or do you want to learn to fight?

Of course, that's awfully biased on my part. (shrug)

I would learn the basics of boxing and kickboxing, especially if it's nearby, and maybe later, if you move to where they have ninjutsu or find an instructor, learn that. Koto-ruy gave a solid advice. I'd like to add that strength endurance is actually what you need in combat and not pure strength. Of course, it's nice to have both. Also, be carefull with bodybuilding if you ultimately want to train in a martial art 'cause a pure bodybuilding program will make you slower and clumzy. There are certain strength and conditioning programs that combine both bodyweight exercises and weights, and will make you fit for MA. I follow one such program called Crossfit. It's at www.CrossFit.com. Check it out. It's awesome.

I just noticed the previous post and I have to agree with it. Chose one of those places, and you will learn to fight. I don't think ninjutsu will do that for you but I may be wrong. Koto_ruy is doing it and seems to be an expert. If that's what you wnat to do, he'll give you a good advice on it.

cheers for all the advice guys.......im already practicing kickboxing with the PKA and doin karate at a local school, im not new to martial arts its just im doin these martial art purely because there the ones i can get too.......its just ninjitsu appeals to me because its not a common MA (in the south). its a new challenge which requires different physical attributes......i mean i had a faze were i wanted to at least try capoeira but the fact theres no place here to do it jus made me lose interest an stick to what i know..........London is defenetly to far away........but i appreciate all the help guys cheers

Far from an expert, but I have used it during my line of work (private security) and a lot of it is very effective. Like any art, there's some aspects I'm not fond of, but there's always ways to work around it.

Nah, my friend Brookie sent me that pic a week ago and I love it If anyone goes to the kusari fundo seminar in PA, they'll probably get to meet me in person. I'll probably put up a pic sometime soon anyways, once I fix my digital camera.

                            Bodybuilding vs Bodyweight Training

Alright A few things I know are alot of the big big guys in the gym I see are slow and cant move with full motion is it because they have big muscles.
Yes that has some to do with it but more to do with it is that they do not stretch at all they start off with a warmup if at all that is to heavy and they often take steroids.
All of these things will inhibit movement and decrease the actually length of your limbs and neck (like a football player looks like rushing). The answer is stretch like you do before karate but do it the same before weights but only for the muscle your going to workout if your not doing full body circuits. Now the calisthenic things is easier to explain you have gotten to a point where you are used to using metal weights not body weights your muscle have grown to using the heavy and not the you so has you mind (motor recruiting fibers in your muscles) I guarantee if instead of doing bench presses and triceps extensions that if for 1 week and everyother day in that week you did a set of 8 dip then a set of 15 push ups then repeated that 3 times for the workout session that you will go back and notice that you can do more on as soon as the next or last session (unless you hit the weights on those muscles again before then). And believe me when I can bench 300lbs and can only dip 10 reps and there are some women walking by the bench does seem alot better of an idea but the best is always discipline.
