that might be the problem, i do standing backs on trampolines all day, but maybe even with no bounce the trampoline springs me, and it feels safe. When i drag the mattress outside and do it with my friends i end up doing it a few times, then not being able to do it, out random fear and that fact that my abs and legs DIE after a long time of backflips. My main problem is not spinning back enough, i land on my knees mostly

So you can do a few successfully - if that's so then don't sweat it. Yeah your abs start killing you - you have to really build them up. Try to think of it as any exercise - you do as many good, clean reps as you can and only start with one set. Then week by week build up to them and you'll get to that point where you can start doing them safely on grass, then on more solid ground, and eventually whenever you feel bored, etc.

That you sort of have to figure out for yourself. Personally, it helps not to overthink it, visualize the movement and how it should be done (at some point when you're not doing them), and then when you are practicing concentrate on a good set. It's sort of like when you lift weights, you can't think about the weights themselves (especially when you go heavy), and you just do perfect sets with confidence - the realization of how much you lifted and the "oh shit I'm strong" stuff comes afterwards.

i really like the idea of doing backflips. just how bad an idea is it to wonder off to some grass and try one? i remember teaching myself to do handstands through refusal to stop trying for several hours, will this work with backflips? or am i just gonna nail myself into the floor?

Listen
Well you really have to figure it out for yourself. Well im 13 and just a few weeks ago i landed my frontflip (its a fact their harder than backflips) and i told my instructior that i really wanted to do a backflip and then he told me just to do a round-off backflip without a spot.... and i did it...... i freaked...... and i landed on my neck..... well my instructor appoligized, but instead i thanked him. You see, your worst fear while doing a backflip is landing on your neck and i already did that AND it didnt hurt at all!!! In order to defeat your fears, you must face them. I did that and now i have no fears of doing a backflip at all.
If you have trouble making it all around because of lack of stregnth just do what i do. Every friday 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm i can practice tricks at my karate school but that is the only time i can really get a hold of mats to land on. Everyday i hold a horsestance not one like
/-\ _
l l but instead l l (hehe it looks like a square) but the point is that you must hold a solid horstance as low as you can for as long as you can. once you create a time you must hold it to that time everyday you do this strech. After like a week or two try to add another 30 seconds to a minute more the the strech to match your newfound muscles!! My scedule is....
i hold the strech daily for monday, tuesday, wedsnday
i take a break thursday (to rest up for friday)
friday i go in and test my self as much as i can and if i have enough strength to do it friday night i will
saturday and sunday i hold it too.
over all i can hold the strech for 5-6 minutes (hey im only 13)
p.s. can you really use matresses for backflip mats?? if so how thick and big?
