I gotcha dan. I'm a gymnast. You don't have to do hindu squats or anything like that. Set before you flip, bend your knees a bit and throw your arms up from down by your hips. DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU, i see so many street punks who do back flips and rip there necks to the side to try and "see" where they are going. If you can do it on a trampoline correctly you can do it on the ground. I wouldn't recomend a matress, your balence wont be so great and you could break your ankle when you land. Do back handsprings to get the feel of going over backwards without looking. When you can do a couple in a row, your ready to go ahead and try. I'd recomend just joing a gymnastics gym or the local Y if they have a gymnastics program and joining a rec class. A friend with his hand in the small of your back to push your hips up as you flip would be nice. Have him practice spotting you on the tramp first. When you throw your arms up imagine they become a window and smash the window with your knees. Don't loose the 90 degree angle of your legs and torso though because then you start to counter rotate. Man up, do it, don't choke or yes you will land on your head. And grass is soft, if you dont have mats that would be the best idea.
