  • What things should I do to look like a MMA fighter?

Right now I am like 150lbs and 5'10". My aim is to be in the condition of like Wanderlei Silva or someone like that. Right now, you can look at me and say that I am a skinny basketball player. I would want someone to look at me and say that guy is probley a pro MMA fighter. So I guess it would be good for me to gain lbs till I hit about 200lbs. So what are some good ways to do this? Also what are some ways to start gaining muscle mass?

Right now my plans are to start running a lot to increase endurance. I also do pushups and crunches when I am bored. I'd like to know some other things I can throw in to my regimen that I could do inside my house. Also, as soon as school starts I will be able to start using their weight room to my advantage.

although i probably shouldnt lecture you on your body, if you tried competing now in the welterweight class you would actually be at and advantage since most of the fighters in that class are around 5'7ish whereas in the 200 pounder class there more around 6'0 and above. I know if you are skilled, then a little bit of a reach disadvantage wont be that big of a factor, but its something to think about. Anyways, if you want to build mass, then definitely start hitting the weights, and try to up your food intake. You could split it into 6 smaller meals, or maybe just eat more at your 3 meals, but basically get your calories at least 500 more than your current diet. Dont bother with supplements at first, because you will pack on the mass easily, most beginners do. I suggest doing compound exercises with heavy weights(around 5 reps to failure) with 5 sets each. The exercises id suggest you should revolve your routine around are:
    -bench press
    -military/standing shoulder press
-deadlifts(from the ground or a power rack)
    -bent over barbell rows
    -squats(front or back)
those are the important ones, but if you want to supplement it with some other more isolating exercises some useful ones are pull/chinups and dips, but if you have extra time by all means do what you want. Now im not saying you have to abide by this, but it would definitely pack on the mass if you get into it. If you dont understand what some of these exercises are then google them, or ask someone who is either qualified in weight training or is experienced, or both. But be wary what some of the guys might tell you in the gym or what you read in magazines because alot of it is BS. But dont forget to eat, most bodybuilders say it is 20% working out and 80% diet.

how to look like a mma fighter? Well you can usually spot them by their physique, but not always..think Jeremy Horn. Tatoos, but not always... Bad Boy or no fear logos and silly hair die jobs optional. Standard appearance is scars to face, cauliflower ears and a big ass grin and a confident stride.

Scars to face can happen in football or rugby, too.

Ryan, don't try to look like an MMA fighter. Fight at your own natural weight; maybe you'll fill out to be 170-190 in a few years, which isn't huge but neither puny. Actually, the light heavyweight-cruiserweight category seems like the most competitive!

Those guys can hit as bout as hard as heavyweights but have the mobility and athleticism of middleweights!! You will be about average height in the light heavyweight or kind of short in the cruiserweights (but not unusually short).

But if you insist on being a heavyweight, keep in mind you will be a really short heavyweight at 5'10" and will have to have a fighting style that matches your build....

Focus more on what you can do, than how you look. True, people won't mess with you if you look intimidating. At the same time, if you look unimpressive you will have an interesting advantage.

I just want to do something before I can join wrestling this year. I need to prepare my body physically I think. But yes, eventually I want to look like someone that you just look at and say I don't want to get in a fight with him. I don't care how heavy I am really, I was just doing an exact comparison to Wanderlei Silva who is 205 5'11". It is just that I care about how my body looks muscle wise. I want to be chissled in every thing, my legs, my chest, my arms, my stomach, and my back. Now I can't get in to the weight room until the mid of August when school starts back up. I just need to know what I can do RIGHT NOW that can improve on my muscles. Also my friend tells me pushups doesn't actually build muscle mass it just makes them leaner. So if I could get more exercises like that, that I don't need equipment or weights, it would be good for me now.

bro, honestly the only way u will gain 50 lbs of pure muscle anytime soon is with roids. dont worry about bulk so much, cause without roids u wil never get that big with that build. just workout hard and do cardio as well. dont lift for bulk only. u will get built and fill out and gain some weight but still be slender and defined.

for now u can do this shit

            situps
            crunches
            leg lifts
            pushups
            squats
            mabye pullups?
            running

            get dumbells they are cheap

              Stay FAR away from roids...

if you want to look like a tank but have the engine of a go cart take roids...
it might just work better to LOOK like a go cart and run like tank...again think jeremy horn or Frank Shamrock. No matter how good the outside looks on roids the insides are A.F.U.. not to mention if you get lucky and meet a lady your "Game" may not be up to par...

I may win todays award for being Mr. obvious, but if you want to look like a mma fighter you should train mma. Find a school in your area that trains mma or take up muay thai and wrestle at school.

If you have a good diet and bust your ass working out you will develop naturally into the best "you" that is possible. Does that make sense? There are also many books and videos available that go over the conditioning aspect of mma, which it sounds like is what you are really interested in.

Take as much different kinds of steroids as you possibly can, eat creatin, and spend 12 hours a day hitting bags

its wouldnt be neccesarily impossible to gain 50 lbs without steroids, but its a question to whether you would want to move up to that heavy a weight. Many natural bodybuilders have gained over 100 pounds without roids. Of course, they often have genetics on their side and it would take probably something like 5 years to gain that but it certainly is possible to gain 50 pounds. I actualy think a good idea would be to start training and fighting in your current weight class and see how you feel about it before deciding to move up in weight. You will become more confident in yourself and will most definitely get more ripped from all the cardio and that sounds like what you are actually after.

do martial arts forums include "looking like a martial artist"?
i thought the emphasis of this forum was training for martial arts?

"It is just that I care about how my body looks muscle wise. I want to be chissled in every thing, my legs, my chest, my arms, my stomach, and my back. "

if looks is your thing, then body building would be much more suitable for your goals. why look like a martial artist?

im studying to be a personal trainer and this is what ive gathered...

if you really want to gain weight and keep it muscle:

                        1) consume about a palm size of protein in every meal.

                        2) dont cheap out on carbs. eat about a fist size of carbs in every meal.

                        3) dont forget about essential fats, vitamins, minerals, and lots of water.

                        4) heavy weight and low reps in each exercise.

                        5) main lifts = bench/chest, squats/legs, and very important, russian kettleball exercises/shoulders and back and even biceps (very very effective).

                        6) i almost forgot...eat six times a day. once every two-three hours. there was a study on amateur boxers. half ate three times a day. the other half ate six. the first group lost the same weight as the second but, they also lost twice the muscle and half the body fat as the second. if you want to keep all of your muscle...do the six meal a dayer.

i dont think i left anything out. so bottom line...if you want to gain lots of muscle, then follow these rules but, i would listen to these guys about staying where you are for now or gradually gain muscle instead of quickly.

For starters have a rountine not just when your bored.
                          Do:
Dips (triceps) 3 sets of 10 reps
Push ups, Crunches, Full sits ups, The Plank (abs/core muscles) 30 reps of 3 (for each) hold plank for as long as pos.
Leg Raises, Squats (legs) 3sets of 10 reps
Pull Ups, Back Extensions (back) 3 sets of 10 (you may find you can't do 10 pull ups)
All the above excerise are body weight. Do them till you can use a gym.

You could even buy some dumbells or dyno bands so you could do some other exercises.

you sed in your first post you do alot of endurance work (CV)...........there is a reason you dont see endurance runners built like brick shit house doors. drop the cv if you want to bulk up it restricts your muscles from gettin well needed rest after heavey weight sessions.

What i tend to do to bulk up is do no cv training except punching/kicking drills, and jus lift for strength and power....................strength = 3-5 reps power = 1 rep...................i usely do 6 weeks on each...........then drop the fat in my endurance/toning faze try it out with 6 meals a day...........i use whey protein, weight gain an creatine but its your choice. remember to add rest days an rest for a week after every six weeks.............also if you do use creatine an supplements try an detox in your weeks rest. good luck

Honestly you sound like you want to look more like a body builder, this is a pretty dumb thread because MMA fighters wouldnt try to gain 40 pounds theyd try to maximize their weight in the best weight class for them, probably Welterweight for you (170 pound max).

Besides welterweight is the best lol.

Oh and a thought if you wanted to look like a MMA fighter, or have people at least think you are, just buy a shit load of "Tapout" clothing, thats what all the MMA fighters wear.

Although dont be surprised if people laugh at you when your decked out in "Tapout" and dont know anything about MMA, as you clearly just want the image.
