Whats the diffirence between doing them? Besides the change in stance, and elevation.

do push ups then. have gravity working against your arm muscles not perpendicular to them.
hands together works biceps most, hands apart works chest. on kuckles makes them harder by changing muscles used and helps condition fists.
the ideal is probably hands below shoulders, on knuckles. they all work shoulders.
does the wall one actually achive anything? im off to find out if that actually works your arms or not because i cant see them working as well against a wall

Pushups are a pushing movement. Your biceps are minimally involved if at all, depending on the hand position.

i did mean biceps but i see where your coming from. moving downwards under control uses biceps i think.... i said biceps cos i was talking to a guy earlier that day about pressups and he thought they worked biceps when hands were close together
i tried the wall thing, and yeah you feel it in your arms, but for me at least i did a lot more before i felt that compared to normal pushups

You guys want a good workout with push ups? Ill give you one that a friend gave me long ago. You get a deck of regular poker cards. The face cards are worth 10 and the ACE's are worth 25. Now You draw 3 cards and add them up to give you the total amount of push ups that you are going to complete. Now if you draw an ACE you need to set it aside and draw another card. After you complete that set of push ups dont draw 3 more and just put the ACE infront of you and perform the 25. After draw 3 more and go from there. I think that the whole deck is worth 450 push ups. Now the rest time is 15-30 seconds before you draw 3 more cards for push ups. Try this out and get back to me...if you can type.

When you do a good pushup you use your whole body. Not just your arms. You use your hands, arms, shoulders, chest, back, abs, and all the way to your toes. Press-ups are good for when your injured, tired, or just cant do pushups for one reason or another.
Sometimes it doesn't matter how you do them as long as you do them with proper form. Say you want to do a 1000 pushups. Well you start out doing them declined, on your knuckles, zen style, or clapping. Later you tire and your arms get wider and wider. Soon your doing wide-armed pushups. Cant do anymore and you have to start using stairs to help you out (press-up style). If you cant do pushups, pressups can help you develop the muscles that will get you there.

We have a game I've played for as long as I remember called prison-pushups which is pretty similar to the game above, but has been modified.
Red=crunches
black-pushups
Aces=burpees
anything under "5", you do the most difficult varaition of that exercise as possible. For example; if you get a 2 of spades you might do fingertip pushups.
They key is to do them all. If you can't do regular pushups, do widearm or use stairs, but do them all. Go through the deck up to 3times. Once you flip the top card you have to play till the end. Once you get all 4 aces the game is over.
I've been doing this every morning for years. It's kind of a motivation for me to do these exercises which noone really likes doing.

well i've asked various people, and everyone said push ups and press ups are the same thing. someone suggested they were english and american terms for the same thing. so im going back to my initial idea that they are the same.
exercises based on a pack of cards sems a good idea to me, a means to vary things.
i tried the press ups game rogue suggested. that hurt a lot and i didnt even come close to finishing. gives me something to keep myself occupied tho
