    #1 Factor - Diet

In addition to calories in < calories out, try to take in lean protein. For example, I go to college but I still scraped this together:
    ~9AM granola bar
~11AM sandwich or some fruit or a bagel
~2PM whey protein mix(helps prep for the heavy evening workout)
    ~5PM salad+grilled chicken breast
~8-9PM another whey protein mix post-workout for recovery

That is technically 5 "meals" a day, and the total calorie count still can come in under 2000. I'm planning on upping calories soon as work load increases and as I need to lose less weight.

Doing this for 1 month I lost half my gut.

    #2 Factor - Metabolism

Eat multiple times a day and gain muscle by lifting. The idea you can "look cut" or "toned" by doing cardio alone is idiotic. Yes, you can.
But it's much more efficient to build up muscle and use cardio intervals. Not only will they build strength, you'll get bigger muscles, which will consume more calories while you're resting, AND intense interval training also burns more calories post-workout than lond distance work. And total body workouts...same idea, get more muscle all over, more calorie consumption.
