  • Conditioning Knuckles

After much study I've decided to start training myself to strike with the bottom three knuckles. Now I understand that the pinky knuckle is significantly weaker then the other knuckles but I believe the benefits of striking in this fashion are to great to ignore. Therefore, I'm looking for ways to condition my knuckles to handle striking like this (and mis-striking). Please give any suggestion and/or routines you have.

You care to explain these benefits because I can't see any.

Maybe if you're trying to break your hand then its benefical.

I do have a suggestio though....don't hit with those knuckles.

First, if you don't approve then don't reply. I'm just looking for advice.

To describe why I've come to believe what I do about punching would take some time. But if you like I can suggest some of the research that I've done so you can see why I came to the conclusion I did. The recommended reading would be: Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense by Jack Dempsey and Straight Lead: The Core of Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do by Teri Tom. Those two would be the best starts I think, I've done other research but that is plenty of reading for now.

The bottom 3 knuckles are fine to punch with assuming you are thinking of sun or vertical punches, thats what the old bare knuckle boxers did, and it's common in many of the CMA's. Try some Iron palm or sandbag punching but make sure you use a Dit da jow that is a padding formula!!

            Damn I hate being wrong

See I'm young and I talk outta my ass alot.

Apparently you are correct sir. I was just schooled and didn't even realize that I also punch with the bottom 3 knuckles. Never really had time in a fight to watch that.

My sincerest apologies to you sir.

I would suggest some type of iron palm training. Grand master James Lacy has a great program you should check it out.

Man I can't believe how wrong I was.

Goes to show preconcieved notions get everybody eventually. Even people on this forum.

            Sorry dude KOTF

Seeing as we are open hand fighters who only throw horses hoof punches and sun punches you get a pass on not realizing the difference dude.

Would you have some recommendations for Dit Da Jow? I do want quality but affordability is also key. If you know how to make it and if it isn’t too hard (or if I make a mistake it wouldn’t harm me) I would be interested in that too. All in all I’ve never used Dit Da Jow before.

Punch a refridgerator. Also play bloody knuckles against someone, they punch with the top two and you punch with bottom 3 and see who hurts more.

be sure to punch brick walls and make sure to smash your fist in between some doors while you're at it.
we want to condition the fist not outright break it.

Well, some refridgerators work, they have give and flex if you have nothing else to punch. Also the bloody knuckles was just to show which knuckles are more efficient.

If you were conditioning the two biggest I could offer some pointers but not on the bottom two.

Why would your advice work for some knuckles and not others? At any rate I'm still interested so please post conditioning advice you have. Thanks.
