Do you have a bag in your garage?

I'm wanting to put up a bag in my garage. Anyone else done this? I'm a little worried about it ripping out of the ceiling even being put into a stud. Will it hold or is there a way to hook up to a couple of locations to balance out the weight? What size bag should I go with? I'm 6"4 185 pounds and just now getting started, so I want to start with the right equipment. Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. Have you heard of the floor model bag holder? I think it's called a cornerman. It is a tripod with stakes to weight it down with plates. Hitting a bag with your fist is ok, but the power of kicks will surely damage your house over time. And it you have powerful punches you still may want to consider the floor model.

So would I have to bolt the tripod down or will it be able to take punches and kicks without moving.

My complaint with floor holders is that the one's I've seen don't really allow the bag to swing freely.

Right now my bag is hanging from one of the beams in my shed. The shed was so beat up already when I bought the house that it's pretty much inevitable that I'll have to replace it anyway so I don't worry too much. It's kind of a moot point now since haven't actually used that bag since I changed gyms. The gym I go to now is only a couple miles from home, open all day every day and has a half dozen bags hanging. It just doesn't make sense to work out at home anymore because I have such a great place that's so close.

the beams you can just add support to them with some 2 x 4, cut the ends at a 45 degree angle and tack them in the coners . In my garage I have a 90 lb bag, a speed bag anda double end bag.

I dont like the wave masters as you can hit the core inside and hurt yourself. Floor models can be kicked over. I prefer to hit bags that hang, so I can practice circling and timing my punches/kicks also, and hit as hard as I want.

Problem with hanging a bag is you need more room. And usually there is not a lot of structural support in the center of a room. So here's what I did.
I reinforced the beams. I put Three sturdy eye-hooks in a triangle fashion right into the studs.. Then connected the heavybag to the eye-hooks with 3 huge, stiff springs. the bag doesnt bounce up and down, or shift, but it does swing freely without stressing the beams. When I'm done for the night, I put a chair under the bag to support it. I may have over-done it, but it works. It cost me about $100 to hang my bag.
