  • I'm Fat!

I weighed myself tonight: I'm 125, ever so slightly moving beyond it. At 5'2" and a lifetime of petite size 6, this concerns me. I take JKD one night a week and hope to try out a Wushu school near me which I hope will give me a physical workout and be something else I enjoy. During my lunch and at my breaks, I take a walk around the parking lot (longer distance at lunch, weather permitting). I also practice holding out my leg to gain balance and try to improve my kicking. I'm not flexiable and I'm hearing impaired so my inner balance is thrown off. Maybe this will burn some fat while I'm at it but I know it's not enough. What other things could I do to improve my martial arts and bring my weight down?

    Laura, 5'2" and 125 isn't fat.

If you want to improve your overall fitness and coordination for martial arts, try skipping rope.

Meh, thats not fat, thats thick. Men like that. You should probably just start doing a little more excersize if you know what i mean

look around for an affordible gym or healthclub to join. there are all kinds of interesting various exercises and machines you can do at the gym. you can sit on bike or walk a treadmill as long as you want while you watch tv, or read book, listen to music etc. staying in shape isnt that hard, it just requires consistency and a decent diet.

Believe it or not, the condos next to me are going to have a gym on every floor. For some reason, ours don't, but at least we're allowed to use theirs. It should be ready in a few weeks or so and you can be sure I'll be taking advantage of it when it's available. I don't like being "thick" either...

125 at 5'2" isn't the least bit fat. On the other hand, if you're gaining steadily, then now is a better time to address it than later.

Keep in mind as you boost your excersize, that you are liable to gain a few pounds initially in muscle - since you don't have a lot of body fat to start with, you may not lose weight at all. For an athlete, the scale is not always the best tool to judge your fitness.

As to particular excersizes, the trick is finding something you will actually follow through on. Start going to the Wushu classes for sure - make friends there so you have a reason to come back week after week.

Swimming is just about the ultimate excersize, if a person actually goes to the pool and does it two or three times a week.

            Good luck

It's not just having a good exercise routine. You need to to have a proper healthy/nutritious eating lifestyle as well. (Note that I did not write "Diet")

No offense to anyone when i say this but those of u who are saying that she isn't fat and shouldnt worry about her weight aren't doign her any favours. She obviously feels as though she needs to make some changes and by telling her that she isn't fat etc... isn't helping, you're being nice, but that isn't y this thread was made.

I've never seen her like all of you, so im not going to comment on her appearance or weight. However, I will say that I many girls who are 5 feet ish usually weigh less than 125 and around 115 or less.

On to the matter at hand. Doing JKD and Wushu are very good ways to stay active, however it depends on how your school is structured. Do they focus more on conditioning? Or do they focus more on denfense and tech. if it's the latter (which it should be since u r paying to learn how to defend yourself not a fitness trainer) u need to do more.

Going to the gym is a pretty good idea. If there is one near by, get a trainer for a day or 2 to see your needs. I will warn u to look at his/her credentials as there r trainers with very little background of the matter but call themselves trainers. I will say that if you do not see a trainer, circuit training is very effective for gaining muscle endurance, strentgh and lean muscle.

If you simply hate the gym or weights take baby steps. Start by havign long 30-40 min walks, goign up every week or so in speed, power walking, jogging, running.

Also, joingin a sport will be very effective. Sports like, basketball and soccer require stamina and will build your endurance while u lose weight. Find an AEROBIC activity as those r the ones that will help you the most.

Aerobic activity + weight training = best way to lose weight.

                        Wrong.

Also, acording to this quick BMI calculator http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/...=125&inches=62 Laura seems to be within the "normal weight" guidelines. So she shouldn't be considering herself fat/overweight. However, if she continues to gain then of course she will fall into the other guidelines, and should just follow the equation above.

if your doing atleast 30min aerobics type exercises everyday then its not your physical activity, its your diet. I recommend seeing a doctor, preferably a nutritionist as different people require a different diet.

If you were 5'2" and 220, it would be a different story.
