I would do things that would make you use your muscles over and over again like digging holes or chopping wood for example, that way you get that functional strenght and not just the I can bench 300 pounds strenght, I work construction and I have to lift not really heavy stuff but I have to lift stuff every day all day and I am a really small guy, but I can generate power for long periods of time not just a short burst. hope that helps.
