  • Running

I'm trying to revitalize my running thread, which enjoyed about a years worth of logs, some valuable gems in terms of training concepts and personal challenges between members, thanks to Tree who had enough heart to stay with it.

After a little research, some new shoes and alot of sweat I cut my 1-mile time from about 7:30 to 6:15-ish within 9 months of consistent work. I was also able to run some nice distances keeping a 9:00 pace.

My new goal is to continue to become a faster runner at distances under 5 miles, while improving my cardio and leg power. I'm going to use this site to keep up with my training log. Others are welcome too.

I'm looking for training advice from experienced runners, particularly those who have gotten past training plateaus. Thanks.

    Yesterday's Run

My running routine for yesterday PM was as follows.

    1 mile jog.
    800 meters of sprints.
    1 mile jog.

I've been running all year long and took some time off over the last month and a half due to heavier work load. I felt this was a good, easy run to get my legs back into the harder running I'd done earlier.

Does anyone here run daily? Britt - if you're around, I think you mentioned that at one point you used to run on a daily basis.

I mixed it up today PM.

5 x 1/2 mile runs as fast as possible. The first was at 2:55. The remaining were above 3:00 with the last one at 3:30-ish.

I'm hating sprints. I really do. That's gonna change over the holiday.

This time last year I was hating running in general. Now I only hate sprints.

Do you run for time, distance or both?

How long do you run and how often? I'd like to find one of those calorie calculators that takes your body weight, run pace/time and spits out how many calories you burn.

I ran flat out as fast as possible for 15 minutes. Didn't pay too much attention to distance, but I imagine it was a little over 2 miles.

I then ran 1:00 sprints followed by 1:00 slow jog for about 1.5 miles.

I still hate sprints. But soon the tables will turn and sprints will hate me.

            BWAHAHAHAH!

              I got your invite.

Unfortunately my running days are long over. (I'm 50) . Running aggravates my knees and lower back but I can run if there is an emergency.

I exercise walk daily to burn caloires. I take a very very long walk on my lunch break weather permitting. I also walk on the treadmill at home and at the local high school track. It's good for my heart and allows me to eat a little more food.

I prefer distance over speed thus I rarely walk fast. I walk by the clock and not by the mileage unless I am at the track. My longest walks are about 90 minutes several times a week. I never ever walk for less that 20 minutes at a time. I have been maintaining a 50lb weight loss for 3 years now and walking has been the key.

As a martial artist, I want to preserve the health of my knees for as long as possible thus I have no interest in running. In fact, we are in the mist of a cold spell and my knees have been aching for two days now. I spend several hours a week working kicks on a wavemaster and normally my knees are o.k. Just this week is rough, but the advil is helping. I think, I will put some sportcreme on my knees at work and tiger balm at home.

Any suggestions for knee health and maintenance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tom. I still do run close to daily, about 5-6 days a week if I can, although I've had to take this week off due to a bug. I work in the family bidness, and my dad and I try to take off in the morning on work days and do around a 5 mile run and shoot for at least 25 a week, but some mornings it's just too busy. I try to make up with a good long run on the weekends. I used to get to a track and run intervals on the weekend and it was absolutely great for aerobic capacity, I need to start back at it.

Last week I got the runs after some bad bulgogi. Does that count?

You lost weight but may not have benefitted from the calories....maybe.

However, if the bad bulgogi caused you to do sprints back and forth to the bathroom then yes.

I've been running every day of the week so far, with no ill effects on the knees.

The weather is rather cold and rainy today - no running. That being said, I can skip rope in doors.

We have the effects of Global Warming here or El Nino. Extremely warm fall and winter. Just got back from a 60 minute exercise walk.
