  • drills, lifts, etc. for BJJ

Quick question for all the grapplers reading this. What exercises or drills that you can do on your own transfer over the best to improve your BJJ game? Shrimping drills, Olympic lifts, etc... anything else?

doing basic arm curls has gotten me out of many armbars, and continuously makes armbarring me difficult as many times i can easily just power out of one, or hold out for a very long time.

when i went to my bjj instructors house i noticed he had a jiutjits belt tied up on some pipe in the shack that he worked out in his backyard. he would do tons of pullups with the belt to increase his grip strength at the same time. this is the same thing that Dwayne Johnson recommends in the video i posted about him. he also recommends this for building grip strength for wrestling.

        Drills for grappling:

        Arm drag.
Arm & Collar lock up to duck under.
Double leg - sprawl- change up.

These are mostly stand up and involve a partner though. Do you want some ground ones?

Stand-up and ground drills I can do on my own that will transfer over to BJJ. I actually asked this on several forums. I'm going to compile all the suggestions, scale them down to my ability level, and create three to five circuits with three or so exercises each and a finisher that I'm going to incorporate into my workouts... it'll be the cardio portion to add to the weight training I'm doing. Thanks in advance!

Nobody mentioned free weights. Especially cast iron free weights.

Kettlebells... especially 1 and 2 handed swings. In 3 months of kettlebell training, I was able oompa someone right into the air who weight twice as much as I did.

Many weight lifting exercises such as the power clean, clean and jerk and snatch are also excellent exercises for developing explosive power... a definite necessity when it comes to escaping from various positions.
