  • Shoulder Problem?

I browsed through the forum names and decided it would be best fitting for this topic to go here.

not to long ago(ok well closing in around 2 weeks) this 'over-zealous' training partner in bjj applied an Americana to me(its the figure-four from side control i believe) anyway since then my shoulders been hurting a little, not a ton, but its starting to go enough to make me notice
symptoms includebut not limited to :P )

-sometimes if i rub/apply pressure to parts of the shoulder it hurts, like still part of the shoulder i believe but going down towards the arm, around that line separating the bicep and the shoulder-flex ur arm knuckles up and you will see what i mean

-its only a little bit, only irritating to me but i guess it still counts as pain, when i go into certain positions i can normal go into with little problem i get a small amount of pain, like if i were sitting up straight and put my arms like i was going to bench(chest or neck take your pick) it hurts a little, or if i was going into a position like a standing military press, with my arms full extended overhead it gives me that same little pain.

the reason i bring this up is because im planning on competing for the first time this coming April 21st, so its starting to attract my attention because i would hate not competing due to a shoulder injury.

-any ideas i can try to help it heal, or any ideas what it is.

u shud really make sure its not a shoulder separation. but basically it could be that u just pulled a muscle or something. u have to make sure u stretch out very well before doing very intense stuff. so just rest and make sure u stretch

Almost sounds to me like its the "tendon" that is like in the middle part of the shoulder splitting the bicep and tri. on the side of your arm. if it is, its a common injury due to the "americana/key lock.

i actually have this problem right now, as it got injured very bad in the past, now i often have probs with it.

the only thing i know to do to it is allow it to rest, and dont be so stubborn with the key lock next time, actually tap sooner lol.

i often use small weights to get my strength back up in it. lifting the weights out to the side, and straight in front of me. doing vertical lifts. helps wonders, but if you push it too much it hurts like a, well u know.

Go to a doctor and find out what it is.

The shoulder is a delicate joint. Despite the fact that it is classified as a ball-and-socket joint, as is the hip, the only thing that reall holds the head of the humerous in place are the muscles of the rotator cuff which wrap over it like plastic wrap. These muscles which include the Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and the teres minor all extend through the acromion process, a small space created by an extension of the scapula known as the acromion which connects to the clavical. Space in the process can easily be reduced though various movements which can pinch the muscles, tendons and ligaments in that area and eventually lead to impingement or worse.

The whole joint is as delicate is it is mobile and it gives up a lot of stability for that mobility. Get it checked out and then talk to a physical therapist if the problem is serious or it could lead to serious and potentially permenant problems
