  • Coaching

One of my goals for this upcoming year is to better myself as a coach / teacher / trainer.
I was wondering if anyone had some quality suggestions as far as media goes (online - books - DVD's etc.) on coaching methods, ideology, motivation etc.
I am looking less for technique or how to in terms of physical exercises, and more on the aspects that truly make certain people amazing coaches.
Over the last 7 years (yes Tim, it has been about that long. Sorry. I am here for good I have modeled myself, my curriculum, and my attitude after Tim my coach, and Brian my BJJ coach. Nothing wrong, nor missing, from these guys, but I am constantly looking to improve my weak areas and better myself for both my own practice and that of my students.
Any help is appreciated (especially from those of you who are coaches).
    Cheers
    Jake

Not to push any SPECIFIC agenda but there is a certain SAMBO coach that comes highly recommended by a good virtual friend of mine...

He makes no reservations about the quality of instruction this guy puts out. He is "withour equal"...

    See; Gene Lebell on Gokor....

Any man that can wear a pink Gi has got to be a bad ass.

Judo Gene is world renown as being one of the best.

He's trained and trained with a number of MA ICONS and holds Gokor in very high regard...

Perhaps I am not being clear. I am not looking for a coach, but rather trying to gain insight as to HOW people coach.
          Thanks

Yes, sorry. I did not mean to imply searching him out for instruction in technique.

If I may suggest that one may learn more than technique by watching a good coach.

            ...

Or not. There is a good deal to be said for communication skills that I clearly lack. To include detail description of exact moments in time. I think the very best coaches teach by example. And they make everything look EASY.

If you can break down each moment and give your class a FEEL for good timing... the rest is easy. In my humble opinion.

That you're striving to improve is a sign of a good coach!

            More power to ya!

I think in a teacher or coach this is a very important quality. it really improves the learning process from my personal experience.

Show your students that you care about them as a person. Give back to your martial arts community.

I would check out Matt Thornton's blog--he is a damn good coach and outlines his methodology really well.
