  • Shin splints

Hey guys, as the title suggests Im currently annoyed by shinsplints

Its not as bad as it could be though, like it isnt hurting enough to make me stop, Im still training, not doing hill sprints or jogs at the moment, but light skipping, bag work etc sparring etc etc (Im currently doing boxing training if you haven guessed)

but its still an annoyance, anyone got any advice for getting rid of them?

at the moment Im iceing them every night and rubbing them down with tiger balm.

As far as I know, the only real treatment is ice and complete rest from impact.

I used to get them when I ran a few times a week. Now I'm a lardarse and they're fine.

Shin Splints...is that a pain up the front of your shins thats very....achey? I get this when I walk fast. It's really painful and annoying, and when I was chasing some youths into a council estate to beat them up for throwing litter in my front garden I began to suffer from this, and I almost failed my mission. So it's impact that causes this? As in...your foot hitting the ground?

yeah pretty much, in my case from a sudden increase in sprinting up hill. I've fixed them up now though they still get a lil sore now and then but I re apply the same techniques, Of iceing them till the soreness goes away, (obviously if you start running it will get sore again) once it isnt sore I rest them for a couple of hours and then massage the calf muscles especially near the shin but NEVER on the shin, massaging the shin can further the damage. I have a few pages of infomation for anyone if they are suffering and would like some insight into how to get them all better again. just let me know and ill send you a copy.

I think ice and complete rest are the only real treatments. However, you could try eating a banana and taking an ibuprofen before you run. See if that helps.

            R.I.C.E

            Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Hill sprints and intervals are important for explosive power, but you have to build a base before you start doing that kind of running.

Instead of starting from 0 and doing sprints. Build up to it with middle distance, moderate paced running for a few weeks - keep it under a 9:30 pace but slower than 8:00, if you're okay with that. Slow jogging/shuffling is actually worse for your legs.

Once your legs get used to the pounding, you can switch over to hills and intervals.

The shrimp based thai food item is right.

You can't ever go wrong with the shrimp-based thai food item - even if you're allergic to shellfish, you can get it with other meats.
