This is of my own personal experience over the past 5 months and my study of muay thai.
I started jogging around a local 400 meter track (typical olympic sized track)near my house, i could only run 1.2 kilometers when i started (which is 0.75 miles) now i run 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) every morning.
Also i started skipping, only slowly at first, i just tried to jump for as long as posssible, but then i incorporated some training i did with my boxing cousins which goes like this :
      approx. 5 mins skipping
      no rest 10 pushups
no rest 40 scissor lifts with your legs
short break of say 1 minute to regather breath and drink some water.
      repeat 3 times
Of course this is what i started with after running for a month and a half. Now I do 5 rounds of this and have increased the number of reps of the pushups and scissor lifts.
And now in between these sets, i will do leg lunges, crunches, step ups with weights (body resistance exercises). I also do heavy weights now that i have lost weight - 2/3 times per week.
I try to do some exercise everyday bar one for rest.
I train muay thai 2 times per week, and run every morning to get the metabolism going before breakfast.
The combinations i learn at muay thai are enough physical activity alone to burn fat anyway. I practice my combinations from time to time at home on my punching bag, preferably for as long as possible, until im stuffed.
So really once you get started in your martial art you will be becoming fitter anyway by practicing what you learn.
start off slow and do what you can until you are confident of stepping up the level.
ive lost 24.2 pounds (11 kilograms) in 3 months and have maintained it ever since, i have never gone on a diet, ive generally cut out fast foods though (KFC, Mcdonalds etc). I eat chicken/ham & salad sandwiches for lunches, but do not cut out a particular food group. just eat all but the fats in moderation. they say you should not take in more than 40 grams of fat per day to lose weight, not more than 90 grams to maintain weight.
But as long as you exercise everyday bar one im sure you can achieve your goals,it does take time, at least 3 months to see a noticeable difference.
      im 6ft2in and 95kilograms now (209 pounds).
You can get some good body strengthening exercises (body resistance exercises) im sure from a local gym, then take them home and do them, this not only helps in strengthening, but burns fat as well.
dont diet, it certainly will not work once you start learning to fight, you need stamina, and energy to perform.
hope this helps a little, best of luck.
p.s. seek some proffesional advice as well, once you start getting into it all a little more.

thanks alot guys...and im looking to start ...thai-boxing/some type of ground fighting...but i hafta work for right now so it's kinda on hold...school is my #1 priority so im working right now to pay for tuition...but once im done with that i'll start taking class and only work part time....because right now imma senior in HS and working full time so i dont have much spare time (at least on the weekdays) for any type of training...but once i finish earning enough for school i'll start getting into shape and joining a school..

also i need to stop smoking/drinking...but sometimes the stress of making quotas makes you wanna go crazy but it's all good...also as an update i've lost 10 lbs and pretty much kepted it off just through diet control... i still eat fast food in moderation...i dont have that much choice when im on the run constantly...but i have gotten better about overeating and eating better...

        any more suggestions...thanks guys

Tiger King's post was perfect. All that he's doing is what needs to be done. If your pressed for time though, do this. Run every morning as soon as you get up. Eat breakfast when you get back. Start out doing this every other day, until you can do it every morning. Work your way up to running a half hour. When you quit smoking your body will try to put on weight. I put on 50 pounds when I quit. And stop drinking. Alchohol has 7 calories per gram. Fat only has 2 more than that at 9. Carbs and protein are 4. So you see you're drinking liquid stomach fat.

              ouch

That sucks. I've been injured and had to take 3 weeks off before. I almost went nuts. But ya, your training program is similiar to mine. Either you've done a lot of research like I have, or you've just stumbled on the perfect plan to lose weight by accident.

I actually used common sense to start off with, just building it up, then my boss asked me to come to a gym with him, and i learnt a few bodt resistance training methods there, and now im back into some weights, which im learning about as well as i go.
rest days and body rejuvination and what you eat are all very important, i havent really had this attitude till joining a martial art, which i hope benefits me throughout the rest of my life really.
Which arts do you do silat? i just stick to the muay thai at the moment

I do all the arts associated with Inosanto. Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, Kali, all the different Silats (like I needed to say that), Savate, Muay Thai, Shoot Wrestling, Boxing, Kino Mutai, and a little bit of everything else. I fight Muay Thai, and I teach all the above arts except Shoot Wrestling. I just started learning that one. "Gotta get in on the BJJ craze you know!" But, Shoot instead of BJJ, more all around. As a JKDer, I need the well-roundedness.

belive me, martial arts is the way to go.

i was starting kickboxing just to get in shape, and i got more and more motivated while i was training. it is fun to do martial arts.

Well training schedule or nuitrition. hmmmmmmm

                    i would say.

strenght training a couple of times a week and som low cardio running or power walking.
                    4 times a week.

                    for nuitrition i would recomend

                    proteins
                    cla
                    hca
                    vitamins

                    lots and lots of h2o

                            Hi,
you should set a diet plan in number of calories you need to get...
And then select an exercise to burn those calories...
This is the right way to lose weight...
