Cheating: You’ve seen people load up on extra heavy weight and end up doing a full body “swing” instead of, for example, isolating their biceps. And you know you’re also guilty of it from time to time.
But what is the difference between what Arnold Schwarzenegger used to do, and what Monica Lewinsky did?
Here’s what I mean, and here’s what Arnold did. You use a weight heavy enough, so that you can do 8 out of the 10 reps without cheating, but to grind out the last two reps, and go past the sticking point, you use momentum to move the weight.
This isn’t exactly cheating, because you’re not using momentum on all of your reps.
But how do you know if you are cheating? Well, when you lift weights, do you put excess stress on certain joints? Are you using muscles you’re not supposed to when moving the weight? For example, are you using your back and triceps when you are suposed to be working the biceps? Are you bouncing the weight? If the answer to anyone of these was “YES”, than, congratulations, you are cheating. Not controlled cheating, but the bad cheating.
I suggest you lighten the load and focus on your technique.
One last way to really increase your strength, is use negatives. When going down, go slower than when you lift the weight up.
Good Luck!
