  • Hindu squats, pushups

Would it be okay to try them and add it to my really small/daily workout? The thing is I may have improper form. It`s like doing weights with no supervision, but is it the same with these type of workouts, or is it safe to try by yourself ?

Hindu squats and pushups are great exercises. Where ever you got the exercise from should give you detail instructions on how to perform them. It helps your form a lot to do your exercises in the mirror, that way you can see what is improper. For the squats its simple. Put your feet about shoulder width apart. Tuck your elbows all the way back and put your fists to the side of your chest. When you go down make sure your hips dont go past your knees. Also put your arms and breathing in-sink. What I mean by this is as you go down breath out and also rotate your arms backwards, then when you go up from the squat breath in pushing your arms out and then in. Your arms should being constantly going in a circular motion.

With the hindu pushups get in a stradle position. The spreading width will be different for people with less flexabilty. But make sure your not too deep. Then place your arms out infront of you (make sure there infront of your head) This should make your but stick straight up into the air. Then in a circular motion you go down and come up arching your back. Then go back too your starting position and keep doing it.

These are pretty sketchy diresctions. I would advise you to get a combat conditioning training book which has all these exercises in full illustration. But I wouldnt be worried about hurting yourself with these exercises, because its not like lifting weights. Instead its your own strength supporting your natural body weight, which doesnt put enough strain to really injure yourself. Your knees may be effected if you go to deep on your hindu squat, but thats about it.

    Well I hoped I helped

      Look at this: http://www.mattfurey.com/exercises.html

The knees shouldn`t pass the knee ? His knees are passed across his knee, does it matter ? And about the circular movement with the arm, do you really have to do them or can you just go up and down like that in the pic ?

Hahaha, I freakn` swear I must get into the habit of reading over my posts before posting, then reading it!

"The knees shouldn`t pass the knee ? His knees are passed across his knee, does it matter ? "

I ment his knees are passed where his feet were, and he is on his tippy toes. Does it matter ?

If this type of push up makes a circular motion with the arms and has the back bent I'm not sure if the following will result but if it is done with back straight and circular movement of the arms it has been known to cause some damage.

If the latter pushup isf overdone it can cut off the blood flow to the tricep and causes the muscle to atrophy if done for too long a period.

There was a lawsuit a few years back against a school in chicago where the instructor force the blackbelts to do these for long periods and it caused the tricep muscles to literally die.

I think they were doing an obscene number of pushups but as with anything proper form is important.

I think matt furey does about 100 of each, or so. In india they do thousands. Wrestling is basically the only tye of martial arts in India. They are strong, but they probably couldn't throw a proper kick or punch.
