  • Pain around lower shinbone/calves?

I am not quite sure what caused this pain, and it might be one of the stupid thigns I`ve done:

-Improper Shin Bone conditioning (rolling beer bottle idea) I did it wrong how I was todl I think.

    -Skip Roping on hard floor

-Ligaments (SP?) and Tendons broke somehow ?

I dunno but sometimes when I walk to school or skip rope, I will feel some pain around my lower shin bone, around the lower-inside part. I think it is the bone part but it is hard to explain here. I would also feel *normal* pain on my calves (where bigger part of calves is) when I skip rope, but around the lower part I`m not exactly sure. I don`t know if I should bother seeing a doctor because it only occurs when I do these type of drills, running also.

Sounds like shin splints to me. Probably back off skipping rope for a few days and, if you run, do not run for a few days. Give 'em a chance to heal. They should heal up pretty quick.

Shin splints occur on the shin bone and the muscle that attaches to the outer side of it. So on your right the muscle is attached to the RH side of the shin bone, on your left the muscle is on the LH side of the shin bone. You get shin splints from high impact movements such as running and skipping rope and a few others that don't spring to mind at the moment. What basically happens is as your leg comes down and impacts the ground, the muscle is still moving downward and eventually comes seperated from the bone from the repeated hammering. Then when you move around, sometimes just from walking, it can really hurt until the muscle reattaches to the bone, which will take a few days. It should heal up stronger making you less susceptible to shin splints as time goes on.

An alternative to not exercising while it heals is to tape up your lower legs, restricting the movement of the muscle from the shock.

Being this tired I'm not very good at explaining it. I hope it's clear.

The same thing can occur behind the shins, like in the linked picture.

Are shin splints likely to occur if you skip rope on the balls of your feet and never let your heels touch?

One possibility might be a mild muscle strain or the beginning of one.

There was a time when I was skipping alot of rope and obviously up on my toes whenever I was working the bag, etc...

While I thought I was thoroughly stretching my calves well before and after workouts, I was mistaken as one day about 40 min into a workout I came up explosively on my toe with a round kick and strained my calf muscle pretty good.

This strain was in the lower part of my calf below the head.

The best medicine has already been discussed above, rest, ice, compression and elevation for a few days-just stay off of it.

When you feel you are ready, warm up and really concentrate on stretching the muscles in your calf. Obviously you need to work into this lightly, but work it well. You're going to have to feel this out and experiment with it, stretch toe in, toe out, knee locked, knee bent etc... Take your time and let us know how you are progressing.

hmm I was on some damn internet site saying skipping on the balls of the foot is more effective. Was wrong? But then again I was skipping on a hard surface of wood, well cement then wooden tiles on top of it And sometimes when I walk to schoo/home I would feel the damn pain.

BTW I don`t massage my calves at all after skip roping and other type of calve workouts, is this bad? Because I thought it wasn`t at all necessary.

I don't know much about this topic, but I posted something on how to properly train the calves for martiala rts purposes in a nother forum. You can look it up at planetjubei.com/mazone

My user name is builder_p_5476, and the title is Calf Training Part Two.
