It sounds as if it's a set match. Have you had the advantage of seeing your opponent and knowing his personality? If so, then you can use that on your side. You can meditate on ways to play with his mind. Doing this is sure to get his adrenaline going, but not out of confidence if you play your cards right. The best thing to do is remember how you trained and the purpose of that training. Before the fight, meditate on easing your nerves and boosting your sharpness. If your moves aren't sharp and concrete, you could slip up. Anticipate what he'll do by watching his movements. Sometimes waiting for him to strike is the best offense. Remember, every second counts.

if its not a match but an actual fight that you feel you cant avoid then you should remember that he is indeed not invincible. if you go in thinking you will lose you WILL lose....
if you really cant avoid it you should take it to him before its "going to happen" and shout in his face that its gonna be now or never.... that way you will be prepared and he wont, you will have stolen back the initiative.
if its a match then ignore that.
btw i dont know any martial arts at all, but i still think thats perfectly sound advice.

it woulda been so easy to come on here and say you trained with Bruce Lee and taught Randy Couture everything he knows and stole Royce Gracie's girlfriend.

Originally posted by LeonidasOf course you're scared. Everybody gets scared. It is not reflection on how brave you are. I would argue that the people who go into a fight without a hint of fear are the ones looking to get their ass kicked as to be overconfident is to invite trouble. And realise the fear is not about getting hit. You've been there and done that. Yes the fear of losing is true, but it's more a case of losing in front of your friends and family who might be there to see you. But i think that's more a case of having them laugh at you if you lose. And if that's the case they're not very good friends. And as for the people who are saying this guy's invincible. No such thing. Just use your fear in the fight. It'll keep you on edge and your attention 100%. And don't think for one second that this guy isn't scared too. However. Go into the fight prepared and with a plan, and a second and third plan. And imagine how you'll feel to win the fight, and the most amazing buzz that comes with the win. If you spend more time thinking about that rather than thinking of how bad it'll be to lose it'll help alot.
The Bene Gesserit Littainy against Fear.
Pg 19 of Dune
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
Wait a minute..Are we talking about a fight or a match? Big difference, you know...

When I say fight, I mean a street fight where you're defending yourself against someone who is trying to hurt you. Avoid involvement. Call in the authorities if you've been threatened.
If it's a match, then both fighters are trained participants, subject to rules and the intervention of referees, etc. If it's a fight, then we're facing the possibility that one or both of the participants have not been trained; there may be a disparity in size, strength, experience, etc. and they both face the possibility of being seriously injured in a fight where there are no rules, no referees, no safety precautions, no tapping out or throwing in the towel, no honor, etc.
"The Art of War" was not written to prepare peasant farmers against trained and armed soldiers.
Big difference.

and granted you avoid involvement in fights (as a good martial artist trained in situational apprasial should do). but there are many times when the fight scenario happens instantaneously and there is no opportunity to call the police.
as to peasant farmers, Karate was invented by peasant farmers and fishermen, Sikaran was invented by farmers of the Phiippines in Baras Rizal. I respectfuly disagree that the art of war has limited applications. But if you're trying to say that not everyone is knowledgeable about it i agree with you.
Peace.

Generally think of it this way, if it's not a life or death thing, then fight yours best with no worries, believing in yourself and as long as you do that, whether you win the fight or not, then you have won. Plus if I was in your shoes the match would excite me, especially if so many think he's invincible, it either means he has a bloated ego or he would be a good match and even if lost to would have gotten a great deal more learning and such out of it than he would. Just go into the match acting afraid while being confident, then use his own ego against him.

worst case scenario, you get your ass kicked and you have to stumble around on your hands and knees and gather your teeth off of the hot summer pavement. oh, if this is a highschool fight, the janitor might help you out...
but seriously, if you're nervous, and think you'll lose, the fights already over before it started. its best to just avoid the fight altogether. all that macho shit just makes you look like a goon and it just creates more problems.

to be quite honest, I haven't felt scared before anything for way too long.
I played football last year, and even though this was some pretty serious stuff going on, I felt completely passive before a game, prepping for a game...my non-nervousness has made me more passive in the game. I just look up on the line and think...."zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....hmmm...zzzzzzzz" then I do what I need...
It kinda sucks, at any rate, I quit football, and have played rugby for two years, that helped for sure
