  • How can I beat these people, and what's the right mental attitute?

I will soon be going in a competition where I'm against people who are a lot more skilled and experienced than me. How can I beat these people, and what's the right mental attitute?

First off just do your best.

About all you can do, go in with a clear and focused mind because you can be sure your experienced fighters will. Trust in your teachings because if you lose sight of what you learned, then it will be useless. Also play defensive at first and learn your apponent's weaknesses, strengths, and habbits because a lot of fighters tend to form repeating habbits. Then use it to your advantage. Generally try to study your opponents fights, learn about their fighting techniques and such while in a fight, then use their own consistency in moves and appeared weaknesses to your advantage.

In other words... Be like water, defend everything that comes your way and conserve energy, move fluidly. Be like wind, how it moves in and out of it's apponent and learns it strengths and weaknesses and uses it against them. Then be like lightning, fast, precise, and and use as little energy while causing as much damage. Each one in itself can be considered weak, but when you use all three, you create something like a storm, something able to bring down some of the strongest of apponents. Just remember, no matter what, give it your all and don't lose hope.

The correct attitude to have is "I'm going to do my best and try and learn something." You're not going to beat people who are much more skilled and experienced than you are. That's just the way it is. That's like thinking that, with the right 'go get em' attitude, a high school wrestler will beat Cael Sanderson...not gonna happen.

Doesn't Cael Sanderson do that little spinnny thing before he shoots. The one where he squats and spins around in circles, and then goes for an ankle pick?

Here's an idea...try something different. If they're more experienced they may be used to fighting people who use the best possible, most simple moves against them. If you try things like breaking rythym, and using unexpected techniques (however inefficient they may be), there's a chance you can catch them off guard, or suprise them long enough to get a coupla good shots in. Try varying your movement each round, or varying style. Because if they're more experienced than you, they're probably a) stronger and b) faster, so you may aswell use it as a learing experience or try something new. Of course, if they're that good, they'll be prepared for any move, in which case...I dunno...just visualize Adrienne :P

Just expanding on what ryanhall had to say.Use it as a learning experience the more you fight people better than you the better you will become.

                      Dear Fanman:

You have not mentioned what kind of martial art you are going to have competition in. Perhaps different martial arts can be done in different mental attitudes, once again perhaps.

Allow me to give my ideas, which are probably useful for you, as follows. One thing for sure: you have to get rid of any burdens! Get rid of mental burden, too. Don't expect to win, don't expect to defeat your oponents. Just try to survive, if possible, avoid being knocked down or even knocked out. Just to go through each match in good shape. That's all.

By then, when you are free from any burdens, you can "play" lightly, because your goal is minimum.

If then, and only then, you can play better, regard it as a bonus. If you can beat an oponent, regard it as a bonus also. And if you can beat the best in the competition, regard it as a bonus!!! If you can become the champion, regard it as a bonus. Of course you will not refuse the bonuses.

Good luck. And tell us the results of your tournaments, okey???

Your focus is all wrong. You are setting up a scenario in your mind already by saying these people are more skilled and more experienced than you....Once you've chosen to focus on that thought you're already defeated....What you have to do is re program your mind and give it something else to focus on....here are a few pointers...

STOP THINKING ABOUT BEATING PEOPLE... Be more SPECIFIC... Lets say you get in a sparring match and you're thinking about "how can I beat this guy?" You're asking the wrong question, because your mind has no goal to work towards. Now if you say instead, How can I hit this guy with my Jab, or how can I keep this guy off balance? Now You've given your mind a problem to figure out. Also, You have given yourself something to focus on.
To continue, Let's say you ask the question How can I hit him with my jab? you might try to divert his attention by throwing a few kicks downstairs, ( thights, stomach area) just to see how he reacts to it. Does he move back mostly, does he drop his front hand/rear hand to block it? does he try to move foward and jam you? By giving yourself a "game plan" it will give you an opportunity to focus on when your opponent is vunerable, and will also make you more proactive in your offense. Next try faking a couple of jabs to his face just to see how he reacts. He's either going to do three things, Block mostly, evade(slip duck, step out of the way) or counterpunch. You want to force a reaction from him so that you'll know what to throw at him.

Another game you can play is noticing where his "set point is" EVERYONE whetehr they use footwork or not, has a point where they must :"get set" in order to strike. Watch your opponent to see where his "set point is" and dont liet him get set. You can throw him off through the use of lateral movement, or moving in and out of his critical distance line. Practice this with a sparring partner prior to the match.

These are just two exercises you can use to train your mind

the proper mindset is one that does not focus on winning but rather focuses on fighting. in thinking of winning you'll be thinking of strategy technique assessing your opponent and all that that slows you down. if you know who your opponent will be then you have time to plan. if not, think of it as a street fight -- do what you must.

the fact is he may be just as scared at you. accept that you may get hurt that's reality.

competitions are classed in weight categories so strength is more or less equal. JUST DO IT (says nike) give it your best shot give them hell and don't think about anything else.
