Mike Tyson's legendary trainer Cus D'Amato said that every fighter faces fear before a fight, so you accept the fact that you are afraid and do what you came to do.

i have a similar fear that i feel i need to get off my chest. whenever i think about or are in a real fight situation i get this fear that my punches will hvae no effect. I know ic an hit the bag hard but i feel that when a real situation no matter how hard i swing it won't do any damage.

That's funny, I've sometimes had a dream that I have to fight, and when I punch I get no power, they barely feel my punches, and also I move very slow.

                Fear

I remember the same thing happening to me at school. I didn't think my punches would hurt this kid who was picking a fight with me, and so sure enough they didn't! They were like little gentle pushes of the fist, with no snap or force.

I strongly believe that stuff like this is controlled by your mind and whether you think it will work. It's like tackling someone at football or rugby. If you think you'll get hurt then you probably will, but if you think your going to flatten the other guy then BANG - down he goes. Of course fighting isn't as simple as that because the other guy has got his own agenda, but I think that believing that what you are doing will work is the first essential.

                Hope that waffle makes sense!

Everyone feels fear, its just a matter of focusing that fear. Whenever you get scared, your body moves into a fight-or-flight response, where your body is telling you to either run to safety or fight with all you've got. Your abs tighten up, your breathing quickens, sometimes you'll get goosebumps (as back when we were just apes, we had more hair and that would cause us to look larger and more intimidating), and you get a surge of adrenaline in your body. The main thing to do is try your best to relax and feel confident, then before you know it your fear is in the background and you have nothing to worry about. Meditation will help some of this, so will full-contact sparring as you'll get used to taking some solid hits.

Is that what you do when caught in a bold-faced lie? Are you feeling that way right now?

                      Fear

I know what you mean about fight or flight and being semi-paralysed by that adrenaline rush. I've experienced that many times. But the particular experience I was referring to was different. I felt no fear because I didn't fear this kid, I didn't think he could hurt me. I just found I couldn't hurt him.

I find you need have have a certain sense of pride in yourself and your abilities sort of like "you cannot defeat me you cowardly weakling!" and ya gotta mean every words of it. But then again you also gotta know when to think "damn he's gotta gun!"

also, I learned that adrenaline is basically "used to protect you", it is a temporary "power up" your body uses to increase your overall abilities for a while, so every time I get that nervous feeling of adrenaline coursing through me, I think of it as "okay, I feel powerful"

and then my hair goes yellow and I go super saiyan HYAAAA!!!!

                        yeah..anyways...

                          hey spud,

                          only means you're human.

before your first encounter most feel those kinds of jitters. you need to strain with more stress. practice with full strikes more often and have a friend ambush you every now and then.

of course the point of ambushing ypu is to attack when you are not expecting it.

it's not a substitute or guarantee against thereal thing but that's a little more preparation.

I find that when you get that adrenaline rush your whole body tingles and you got into a hyper aware state. U think that you are moving slowly and attacking less powerfully but most likely you are doing just the opposite and are only perceving yourself to be weaker/ slower because of the adrenaline rush. And in order to use your MA skills you have to train constantly so they become instictive, which is hard at first because people are more incline to attack with "clobbering" style attacks and "arms over head" defences. These are basically the attack/ defensive mechanisms we have when we are born. In short, fight with not a blink of the eye between thoughts. Your mind must be everywhere yet not concentrated on anything.

                              if I may,

...I would say that you know you will get beaten if you keep picking fight's.

I thought the martial art's were so you could prove yourself, and so become confident in yourself, in the dojo and not have to prove yourself in such dangerous situation's.

You know there is better/quicker people out there: that's why you are scared. Why don't you prove yourself able to defend yourself- not attack people like a thug. Your looking for the multiple attack situation aren't you...to brag to your mate's about.. when..you..KICK THEM ALL TO BITS.

THAT'S NOT VERY SELF DEFENCE LIKE!
                              Enlightened yet!
Sihing say's: "You practice the martial art's so that you can become confident enough within yourself to able to walk away from these sort's of situation's." "Do you understand?"

Your martial art has obviously failed you:

But, you will learn...Aikido simply say's-don't waste your energy.
