Yes,sit under a waterfall and imagine you know how to fight.Maybe it will happen through that kind of mental training.I doubt it.
I consider mental training learning patiance and my limits through hard physical confrontation. You can think you are training mentaly, but it will all be very different from the way you imagined it in your head when it really happens. That's why you have to do it with full resistence. To get REAL mental training. The timing. The feel for your opponents weight changes. What you have to do to win against a stronger more powerful opponant. What do you do when you imagine yourself winning, then find yourself mounted with a big guy trying to beat your face in.All the forms in the world wont help you now.Only the expeiriance of 100% full out battle is going to save your butt.No one that looks at a book and then tries it against resisting opponants that know what they are doing is going to pull anything off.You have to get in the pan and get cooked for awhile before you get any flavor to your skills.
Hey,I like that.I just made that up.

If I'm correct, I think what you're asking, TracyKarate, is how do you condition yourself internally (mentally, emotionally and spiritually) for combat.
How do you know that you won't freeze in the face of that bigger stronger guy who wants to beat your face in, as Dan puts it? How do you know you will stand up to whoever has decided to violate your personal space or that of a loved one?
The first phase of learning combat where you learn the tools and techniques. And this you can't do while under "pressure". By pressure I mean adding that realistic element to your training where someone is not cooperating with you and...well...want's to rip your head off.
This first phase is important because you build your physical skills and your confidence in being able to execute your tools. You need to know that you can punch/kick and get the effect that you are looking for.
The next phase of your training, AFTER you have a decent base of technical skills is where you increase the "pressure" in your daily training.
The only way to do this is by frequent sparring. Now sparring with one person is good, but it is the beginning of real "pressure". Imagine sparring with someone who is padded from head to toe, and who is given the one task and that is to bring you down in any way he/she wishes. And you fighting this person with only have a pair of gloves, and a mouthguard on!
Now that is pressure! This kind of pressure will reveal everything about how you handle your thoughts and emotions. But before shaping these "internal" forces inside of you, you have to have a good base of technical abilities. Otherwise, such drills could leave you with a mild case of trauma.
As far as spirituality is concerned, I think it is tied directly to your physical capabilities, mental strength and emotional intelligence. Knowing that each of these elements of yourself are ready and conditioned for combat will empower you beyond your imagination.
If you really want to know more about the psychology of combat, keep a watch on my website www.scientific-combat-research.com.
I just launched it this week. It will feature weekly articles on various topics covering combat principles, techniques, strategies and even fitness and nutrition.
I have been researching martial arts and the combat training process for a while now. However, the site will also feature qualified professionals in various fields from combat, to sports psychologists who will share their expertise with all of us.

The mind navigates the body
I think I get what your saying about the spiritaul side of combat. I equate it to ego since that is always the inner turmoil for most.
If you really divide it up it can be very revealing. Also in true combat the mind navigates the body. Most fights are a mental and emotional test. If you have the proper motivation and have worked a few gross motor skills in an enivorment that simulates real agression and street conforntation you are in far better shape than most Martial Artist. You are always attacked emotionaly first, if you can't get passed someone yelling and screaming or even bravado you can't even begin to get into your game. Physical is always the least of the components of a fight. It is important but a smart fighter with average skills always has a better chance than most. Besides more people defend themselves everyday without a black belt than those that have them, so what are their skills or techniques? It must have to do with that fighting spirit.
Just my thoughts.........

It all starts with training
Sorry Brent, but I have to agree with the guys above your post.
The physical aspects are not the least important part of the fight...fights usually go to the strongest, biggest, fastest, most skilled combatant AND are usually decided by the number of head shots delivered.
True, a smart fighter can use deception, suprise, movement or a weapon to even the odds.
But the people I've met and trained with that have the most resilient attitude and the strongest spirit are also the ones that are the most skilled fighters and have been tempered by the hottest fires.
Try this for a mantra..."the more I train, the more skilled I become; the more skilled I am, the more competent I become; the more competent I am, the more confident I become; the more confident I am, the more powerful I become."
So I say, if you want to become more powerful mentally, keep training.

Synthesis
I would say both sides have some truth. If you are the greatest fighter in the world with full armory of physical skills, but you don't pay attention and get whacked by the skinny little runt with a lead pipe, you lose. If you are aware of your environment and can feel the hostility of the blow before it begins, but can't get your body to do anything meaningful about it, you lose.
It takes both mental and physical skills to win a fight. The one that is important is the one you are lacking. Develop the physical AND mental skills to win.
