  • need help to train

    i am a taekwondo fighter. i am entering the national tournament in may. i need advice from skilled and experienced fighter on how to mentally and physically prepare for this event. i am going to train hard for 3 months and try to prepare myself, mind and body, for this fight. any advice would be greatly appreciated. however, i will tell you now, i do not meditate. i concentrate, but i do not practice buddhist or any other eastern meditation. thank you.

      my routine

      for my routine now, i am going to class regularly 2 times a week, i am doing a navy seal pt training, i am shadow sparring for 5 minute intervals for 20 minutes, and i am doing capoiera.

        What are the rules in this tournament? How long is each fight? What techniques are allowed? Is it a Point Tournament, or a Kickboxing Tournament?

          Even though hand techniques are basically worthless in a TKD match, I would work on hand combinations with a partner and focus mits...it seems to really help my kicking range for some strange reason.

            I have trained and competed in many tournaments and was nationally reanked in wtf. tae kwon do , now i an am @ a master level so i teach and train ,i train others and judge at tournaments .My advice to you is train in your footwork evade, and countering, use roundhouse kicks, and at close range axx kicks and spin back kicks for counter attacks.That is what a judge will look at and be agressive . Practice fast kicking dills for stamina, and go in there with a mind set that its just a exibition , if u take it to hard it will syke u out , try ur best if you dont win ur still a winner but if u dont try ur best ull only have ur self to blame .As far as punching it must be a moving blow to count, if u do get close use the punch , it offsets ur apponent and then after the punch use the axx or cresent kick at close range ,if u miss or score follow up w. the spin back kick.Try to get the most points in the 1st round , then the pressure is of , be offensive round 1 , be defensive round to if ur in the lead and lay back a little round 3 and just coastand evade and get in if u have to . that is waht worked for me ,i used spin hook kick on counters also and had much success but u have to have great timing for that,,good luck

                One of the most effective ways of training for a competition is to practice simple combinations over and over again, until they become instinctive. E.g: side kick, back kick, 2 punches.

                Practice using feints as well, such as a false sidekick lunge, followed immediately my a jab and rear cross. Do not actually execute the sidekick, but make your opponent think you will, putting him on the defensive. Use the lunge to get into punching range. As he will be expecting a kick, there is a greater chance that the punch will make contact. Practice this 10,000 times (on both sides) and, in the comp, it will come naturally. These sort of feints are extremely effective: "make a noise in the East; attack in the West."

                As for meditation, why not give it a go, eh?

                      This is for right before the match. Sit down, calm down and relax. Imagine yourself winning the fight. Become 100% confident in your ability by saying things in your head like,

                      "These guys aren't better than me"
                      "I can beat these guys"
                      "I am the best"
                      "I can do this"

                      Then go over in your head some possible counters, attacks etc. that you may need to use.

                      Then go over saying in your head the things mention before.

                      Everyone elses will prepare you physically quite well.

                      And hey if you lose big deal. Try again next time.

                      Remember you learn more from a loss than a win, if you allow yourself.........
