  • Hapkido in a judo tournament

If I took hapkido, would I be able to compete with the guys on my college judo team?

I'm not asking which one is better. I just want to know if Hapkido has enough throws and similar throws to be able to compete in a judo tournament.

google it..... read a book.... train it.... but dude, you can't base your martial arts training on what forums say, they are a good tool, but for all you know non of us have an martial arts knowledge what so ever(no disrepect to anyone). But I have said this before so I hope it sinks in this time "Martial Arts Is A Personal Thing! PICK THE System, Style, Art, or whatever you want to call it that works BEST FOR YOU!!!!!"

Honestly if you want to learn break dance fighitn because thats what you enjoy, DO IT! If you want to be a street brawler go do an aggresive art, if you want to defend yourself without using a lot of force go find a art to do it. But stop asking about which system is better because of there specialty.

I am going to share a story now. And it may not have much releance to what i just said... and i am telling it anyways. This is third hand info so facts and details may be a little off.I am not saying names because i can't honestly remember the name for the life of me. But to say the least it was my instructor's instructor(my one of my many grandfathers in FMA). He was coming home from a class, when three bulked out to $hit build builders jumped him. They said give me all your money, wallet all that jazz... One Eye gouge and the first guy dropped and screamed like a little girl(acording to my FMA Instructor). The other two guys ran like hell ebcause they are so scared. My point is that he took something that he had trained for a while and made it work for him when he needed it.

    Respectfully,

    Jonathan

Yes but the throws are used diferently. From the perspective of using throws it would be difficult for any style outside of Judo to be competive. There are a lot of styles that use throws but very few that have mastered throws as judoka.

The larger question is why would you want to compete in a judo competion. BJJ , sambo san shou etc I could understand, but not HKD

you just answered your own question, My understand of HKD(very little) is that it is grappling. Judo is grappling therefore....... draw your own conclusion. Can Karate be used in a TKD Match... they are both stand up arts? Rules can be adapted as needed. Two of my students entered in a Empty hand tournement, and had only done empty hand for a month. They used Stick fighting tactics and came away with 3rd and 4th. Another empty hand tournement the kid did 1 class empty hand and walked away with a gold, once again stick fighting tactics. More or Less.... draw your own conclusion

If you learned muay thai, would you be able to compete in amateur rec. boxing matches?

Probably, but you'd be better off focusing your training on boxing for that event...

u will get demolished bro. plain and simple. judokas devote almost all their time on learning to throw people, while hapkido practitioners spend only a fraction of their time throwing. u may have a good general understanding of throws, but u will get demolished in a judo competition, especially vs competitve judokas that compete at the college level. i hope u have good ukemi.

Hah I use my empty hand techniques in lots of situations like when someone is trying to give me a haymaker or a normal punch. I really like FMA's empty hand techniques. But it wasn't in fights, just in friendly fights with my friends.
