    I agree with Drew. Sparring doesn't fullly prepare you for self-defence, yes it should be a part of the training but unless you are re-enacting scenarios that include dialogue and pre contact fight you are not really preparing for self-defence.

      I like the machados pre emptive strikes personally. But sparring against a resisting opponent is a great way to prepare for self defense. It goes along with the aliveness theory.

        I agree, aliveness is crucial and so is sparring but it shouldn't end there, if it does it leaves you ill prepared for real world violence. In reality you're not going to square off with a mugger or rapist or street gang, they won't be wearing gloves or gi's and they won't be playing by any rules that plague sparring whatsoever.

          But you forgot the street boxer people. www.streetboxer.com a few of them have been arrested for trying to attack people and they had gloves on.

            and check out there trailer and see the dude with one hand straight out and the other twirling around and the other dude standing there like how do I get through such a great defense lol
