  • JKD w/t FMA - Now I Get It!

Just thought I'd post something on this forum while I've got nothing better to do

I'm an FMA man and studied a traditional style out in the Philippines. I've been aware of some link between JKD and Filipino martial arts for years, but never really understood why. I thought it was probably just because of Richard Bustello (sp?) and Dan Inosanto being Bruce's students.

A few weeks ago, I was taking a look at my own daga sa daga (knife fighting) stuff, and at the same time having another read of Tao of JKD (esp. the footwork).... and WOW!

The 'ready stance', the footwork, the concept of putting the lead arm in the front of the guard... it's brilliant! Take all of Bruce's concepts of footwork and his 'elusive lead', put a knife in the lead hand and BAM! - you've got knife-fighting.

And it just seems to fit in with the 'triangle footwork' and slashing/thrusting methods so well.

so... NOW I GET IT! lol

    I'm just slow like that

Those notes are probably more influenced by fencing but that works.

Plus the fact that JKD (and what is listed in the Tao of JKD) doesn't actually address weapons fighting in anyway. The FMAs seems to fall in well with JKD.
