  • can someone explain what the straight blast is?

    hey all

can any of you JKD people explain the straight blast to me and how it differs from other striking methods. is it similar to chain punching (theoretically?) how does it differ from a boxing blast like vitor used on tank?

    also how is it trained?

    thanks

A straight blast is many different things, it usually depends on who is utalizing it.Paul Vunak has a rolling back fist straight blast....while chris culigston has a palm strike sb.Vitors straight blast is refered to as the boxing blast and works best for mma/nhb (from what ive seen). The set up for the straightblast alot of the time is to inflict pain or make contact first(via a jab...cross...thai kick etc etc.) and then borrow that second in time when they are in pain or stunned to straightblast into the clinch range. The blast can be used to just close the gap or as a finish like in the vitor fight.A straight blast can be trained in isolation or as part of your sparring game (bolth are recomended) to drill it in isolation you can start by moving around with your hands up like your shadowboxing and then just sprint foward for a couple of steps while throwing the punches...as for sparring well you know what to do.The key concept of the straightblast is to create as much foward pressure as possible because humans are not good fighters while they are backpedaling. It's a good concept to include in any striking art you choose to study imo.

If you check www.trsdirect.com you can see chris culigston's straightblast. If you check google you can prob find alot of other clips. The straightblast was adopted from wing chun however they used it in a defensive mode (waiting for their opponent to attack then countering with the sb) Bruce Lee saw that as a weakness because it was very easy to take someone down or hit them with boxing punches so he changed it by running at them after inflicting pain.Everyone's straight blast will be different as they train it so you should chose the best variation for your body type (speed power hight weight etc etc) good luck bro.
