How have Tae Kwon Do athletes fared in Kickboxing competitions? Statistics and names would be preferable.

I cant say I've ever really followed kickboxing, it seems like every school in my area is taught by a world champion for one or another organisation. Kind of gets me suspicious quickley.

As far as TKD stylists who have gone down that route, I'm pretty sure Tony Sewell, one of the UK's top TKD competitors from the 80's got in the ring and performed pretty respectfully. Haven't got any statistics to give you though, I might look into it.

I recently read that Neil Ernest, the current ITF World & European champion has been selected for the WAKO team, so there's a name to watch.

Also, former AIMAA TKD man Mark Weir currently holds the record of fastest knockout in UFC history, in just under 10 seconds against Eugene Jackson. Here's his fight statistics: http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/f...fighterid=3599

    Hope that's some help.

TKD practitioners used to do very well in Kickboxing competitions in the 1980s when kicks were above belt. Jemal Hasan is a good example of someone that moved from TKD to Kickboxing and did well back then. Once low kicks were allowed (introduced in the late 80's) , TKD practitioners didn't do as well in kickboxing anymore.

        Hi Ollis,

Just to add to your reply; Mark was in the Global Taekwondo International (GTI) organisation, who were affiliated to Grandmaster Hee Il Cho's AIMAA organisation. In the mid 1990's the GTI terminated their affiliation to AIMAA, and Mark stayed with GTI after that period. Mark is an awesome TKD practitioner and I had the privilage of meeting him and seeing him fight many times at regional and national level. A truely talented individual.

        Take care,

        Garth.

I do TKD and Muay Thai, I think it's one of the best combonations of striking. You get the good foot work of TKD with the power and conditioning of Muay thai with the technique and fluidity of TKD.
