  • Starting school, special percausions?

    I was wondering,

Being a female should I have any concerns being the only instructor in the school? What do you do to keep predators out? Are there certain defense techniques I should know before running a school. My biggest concern is ground defence. Any comments?

Theft and burgular of martial arts equipment and training apparatus is a big problem.. They used to smash my buddies windows to steal his stretch machines and heavy bags.

I understand theft is a big problem, I don't plan to have streatching equipment or hanging weight bags. Floor bags with alot of sand should keep them from carrying them away wouldn't you think? I would have all equipment somewhere that could be locked up.

They will break your freaking locks. You need alarms. Don't leave anything visible and watch for inside jobs and rival schools. Cameras with VCR's are best.............the new technology goes through the internet and can record months at a time.

I believe there will be Vcr survalence like your talking about. I will be part of a corporation so all they're schools are the same to an extent. I actually more worried about personal safety either with people going around challenging instructors, I met a few the other day. Or just plane undesireable people.

I've never had a problem with this in 15 years.

Remember Cain on the Series Kung Fu? If you get challenged use the Zen Master Wise Monk ( or Nun in your case) approach. It works every time. Of course if you are a Black Belt instructor level you may be compelled to accept some of the challenges but not all of them.

I do not know why you would ever need to accept a challenge. If you don't have anything to prove why bother.

I get paid to teach, so if someone wants to challege me then they are going to have to put some money on the table to make it worth my while.

I have never been seriously challenged in 15 years. I've had a few difficult people but nothing ever came of it.

I am more concerned about your insecurity in this realm than with you actually being challenged. This is perhaps something you should work on,

Yea, since I have an open mind I will take this as constructive criticsisim. I will look inside my soul and ask myself why I sometimes don't like to back down. Good Point.

There must be others who have accepted challenges. Most of my challenges have been in the form of Sparring matches well within the realms of the Law. For one, If you are an instructor backing down to any and all challenges can really hurt your business.

                    Hardball, and excessiveforce

You both make good points, it's something that should take alot of concideration. The only people who have ever really "challenged" me are younger students or lower belts. And as I've been told you can't let them show you up or it will make you look very bad.

Anh young ha seo, Sah bum nim!

In addition to your tae kwon do or hapkido training, you might consider training with blades or pistols.

Figure it out before you open your school, know it inside and out, because people will be coming to you with those kinds of questions (about home defense, etc.) and it's best if you don't just stare at them blankly and say, "I dunno..."

You should really get some get some advertisement to attract the customers and have some equipment to make it look official, so the student will feel that its a good place to train. Also find a good location to open your school.

I'm starting to have doubts about opening a school through someone else's corporation. Mostly because I'm not in it to take people's money. I want to get paid don't get me wrong. But I don't want to water things down or draw things out longer than they need to be just to get more money out of a person. I want to teach people how to take care of themselves in any situation. Not to make them feel they can and then get taken down when something bad happens. I still want to open a school but i'm thinking I should find a way to do it on my own. Maybe i should just train for a while. Go to a differnt school or something.

Yeah. Don't open a school yet. If you're not absolutely 100% confident about your own answers, choices, decisions, etc. how are you going to help your students with even more difficult questions?

I'm not saying this to be mean!! I wanted to do an apprenticeship recently and my teachers told me the same thing... to wait a few months or however long it'll take me to be able to answer questions that I ask them for myself. They said if I can't do that, then ALL of the people who come to me for help are gonna have problems. Make sense?
