    Question for the grapplers...

My grappling experience is limited so I was wondering how some of you who practice regulary do it. I just did 3 two minute rounds back to back with 3 different people during this mornings workout. I've gone up 5 minutes straight before and am curious on how others train:

What's the avg time you guys spend free sparing? 2 minute sessions? 3 minutes? Etc.? Do you guys goes round robin? Bull in the ring?

Regular rolling can range from 5 to 8 minute rounds, just depends on what hte instructor feels like that day... the number of rounds can be affected by how many people, how much space, and the time they set.

When we do drills, such as passing the gaurd, etc... It would be "bull in the ring" as you put it, with maybe, 3 or 4 groups of people doing the drill, and the rest waiting to jump in, when someone loses. Obviously if there are fewer people you get fewer groups going at the same time.

Sometimes the class will be divided into higher skill/lower skill so you are more at your skill level and then you do drills the same just with half the class or whatever.

Theres times we've done conditioning where one person will go down, fight against person A for a minute standing, then 3 minutes on the ground, then immediately back up fighting person B standing, then 3 minutes on the ground, usually with about 4 people. So as you get tired you are always fighting someone fresh. Than when your "turn" is done, you go join the line of "persons".

I dont know theres a few more I guess but thats the main ones...

We generally do 2 5 minute rounds at the end of every session in addition to whatever we do during the class. We also usually do the I tap you tap drill. (not free sparring per say)

typically 4-7 5 min rounds during regular classes. open mats we do continual rolling until submission - longest i've done so far was about 30 minutes for a single sparring session... so we keep going for around 3 hours

Cool thanks guys. My grappling experience is limited to what I get with my MCMAP training, so it's good to know it's some what on par with what you all do in the civilian world.

Did some 3 minute rounds today and heard will be working our way up to 5 minutes this week. Worked on a drill where student A was in student B's guard/mount and had to work his way out to a dominate position. Then when on to free sparring again. Good training.
