  • $2500 Absolute Tourney in Utah

    http://www.americangrapplinggames.com/

This will be the biggest tournament ever here in Utah. I know there are guys from Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, and California coming.

I've also know the organizers and they are trying to put together a couple of superfights between two of the better grapplers in the UFC and a couple of the better local guys (That's one 2 UFC guys VS 2 Locals). I know the guys they are talking to have made verbal commitments but I don't think they've signed the contracts yet.

Any guys from Mushin or Will's fighting?

I want to see Brandon, M'lissa, Trevor, Devil Dogg, Harold, and the rest of the group bringing back cash.

Man...I wish I had ground game...
Even more...I wish I had money and time to train

I sent a flyer with M'Lissa so I hope the Mushin guys get it. I'd like to see Harold do well myself; however, I think we're going to get a passle of folks from out of state for this one and it will be one of the tougher tourneys around. The Beginner division at the last one was awesome and M'Lissa rolled with the guys because there weren't any other ladies that signed up. I'm hopeing we get to see a large number of female competitors this time.

I've heard from guys in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and California that are supposed to make the trip. If you have any way to get here on Sept. 9th then just pack up and make the trip because this tourney is going to kick some major a$$!

How bout guys from Canada, and I'm not talking about myself.

And what level would you say this competition is at?

I wouldnt think its world class if your talking about people you know competing (no offense), just wondering.

The Absolute, IMHO, will be world class. One of the competitors that will be there was a runner-up at the ADCC North-American qualifiers and has trained Greco at the US Olympic Training Center for years. There will be atleast one former world champion and several PanAmerican and national medalists. The truth is, when you offer a couple of grand people start to show up. There are also supposedly, emphasis on "supposedly" because they haven't signed their contracts yet, going to be two of the UFC's better grapplers at the show.

And I really think that they're planning on a GI show some day in the relatively near future.

                Update on the superfights:

One of the UFC guys that are coming for a superfight is Frank Mir. He was going to have a match against Brandon Ruiz who was the North American ADCC Qualifier runner up and has spent years training Greco at the US Olympic Training center.

Brandon is a personal friend and occasional training partner and IMHO he would have smoked Mir . . . unfortunately his wife just had a baby and he's trying to get everything organized for a move back to Utah so he had to withdraw from the match.

They are trying to get Mike Colby, a Walt Bayless blackbelt, to step up and roll against Mir. Colby hasn't accepted yet (we should know tomorrow) but it loos pretty damn good. Colby is more than a decent replacement.

The other UFC fighter is Joe Stevenson and Joe was supposed to go up against Ben Call. Joe's november fight in the UFC has been pushed back but he still hasn't gotten clearance from the UFC for the grappling match.

Joe's opponent, as of the last thing I heard, rummored to be Ben Call. Ben is also a Walt Bayless blackbelt and is just plain scary. And I mean that.

I believe that Joe will get the clearance he needs from the UFC and I'm hoping that Mike decides to take the match. The superfights are going to be incredible AND both Joe and Frank have said that they're participation depended largely on remaining eligible for the absolute tournament . . . in other words you might get to see them roll multiple times.

They have also just announced a third superfight between Jeff Glover ( Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller black belt) and Ricky Lundell (Pedro Sauer black belt). You should know who Jeff is but Ricky may not as familiar. Ricky is probably the youngest blackbelt in the country. He has something like 12-13 years of daily practice and he's only 20 years old. I don't think he's ever done any other sport. Everything is Jiu-Jitsu to this kid and his game is absolutely incredible, give him a couple more years of "seasoning" and he'll be doing VERY well at the mundials. This is may be the most technical and exciting match of the entire event . . . unless we get some "out of towners" showing up that I haven't heard about yet.

                Registration starts monday.

Mike Colby is out, Dave Anderton is in.

Anderton was the only guy to pin Brock Lesnar during Lesnar's college wrestling career. Anderton will be weaker on the sub game but he does have some decent experience and I believe he trains with Ricardo Mori (I think that's his name, it might be Eduardo) who is a BTT black belt.
