What are the main things you think you need to know when applying ground grappling in real life self-defense situations?
In my opinion and from observing real fights that have gone to the ground, either you should know how to effectivelly escape the mount and headlocks or how to effectivley use them yourself.
It is true that real fights can often hit the ground but it's not as complicated as many may assume. I mentoined escaping the mount and headlock because nearly every real fight I've seen that went to the ground involved one person mounting the other person or having someone in a headlock. Even when you look at the Gracie challenge matches the main problem for the strikers was that they didn't know how to escape the mount. Being able to escape the mount and headlock are probably the two most important grappling skills you need to know for real fighting along with how to use them yourself. So I think that if you can effectively escape the mount and headlock while on the ground then you are probably more prepared to handle yourself in a real situation than you may realize because again these seem to be the two most common positions taken in many real fights that go to the ground.
Think of it this way, most people out there that you will have to deal with will probably be untrained in grappling so the mount and headlock are going to be the most natural things they will know to use on you when the fight hits the ground.
