  • Colleges/Universitys with mma programs?

Does anybody know of any colleges/universities (preferably in the northeast) that have mma, bjj, or muay thai programs of some kind? My applications are due in this week and I would love to have the option of going someplace where i could continue practicing. Even colleges with some good facilities in the surrounding towns would be good to know. Thanks.

Where are you living at now? Also, what degree do you plan on pursuing? Are you going to bounce from a community college to a university, or do you plan on going straight to a university? Which colleges have the best programs that make you reach your highest potential to earn the degree? Which ones are you likely able to be accepted in?

I think it would be a good idea to narrow it down for us. Then we'll let you know what MMA schools are around those campuses. If not already being held there.

There are a number of schools that have BJJ programs now and a growing number with Muay Thai. However, you are more likely to find BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA existing as clubs on campus rather than "programs"

      Good luck

I'm in wakefield, a small suburb outside of boston, which is why I'd prefer to go someplace in the Northeast (so i can come home if i want/have to without that much of a hassle). I'm probably going straight to a university, but i have no idea what i want to study, so pretty much anyplace with a decent number of options is viable. I don't really know where i can get into, though. I get good grades and im im the top 10% of my class. But as far as extracurricular activities, i pretty much just have boxing/mma, which I am told a lot of places may consider negligable just because they're not affiliated with my school. I appreciate any help.

Umm I think you should look at what else the schools have to offer first.. I imagine you can find mma type gyms most places in the usa. There are like 4-5 in portland oregon, and mma isnt even hugely popular here.

odiss, I don't know about schools in that area but Roberto Maia is in Boston and as a 4th degree BB I'm pretty sure he's the highest ranking guy in the entire region. I believe he's still associated with Gracie Barra.

I've never seen a MMA or Muay Thai course in the bulletin, but as far as I know just about everywhere has Judo
I think you'll probably have to find a club or gym in the area rather than actually through the school, but be sure to look through the bulletin. If you see any courses offered that even slightly interest you give it a shot since you're not paying by the unit anyway. I got into Judo because the archery class was full!

college ma programs tend to suck, at least it did in my experienced. the clubs arent much better either. i visited a jiu jitsu club at a university here not too long ago, and it was a bunch of white belts doing nothing but can-openers and ankle locks anytime they got into guard, it was terrible.

At the University of Rhode island, we have a MMA Club but it is really essentially a grappling club because the school doesn't want us killing each other.

There are also a few good establishments, Borrelli MMA Training Center is 4 minutes away, the Mat Santos Fighting Academy is 30-something minutes away, and Tim Burrill Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Tim is fantastic, check him at timburrill.com) is under an hour away.

Columbia has a pretty strong bjj club, with a Renzo brown belt teaching at least twice a week, and you could always go train at Renzo's if you can afford it. Rutgers has a decent club, NYU has a club as well. Yale has the beginnings of one.

I went to Roberto Maia's school (in Newton) for 2 years and he's a great teacher. If you decide to stay in the Boston area, his school would be a great choice as far as BJJ goes.

Garland, that's not the U of U MMA club . . . they just hang out on their forum. Spencer, the guy that runs it is a Mushin student not part of the U of U's MMA club. Ringworm is the username of the guy that runs the club.

Oh...my bad. I just saw a bunch of posts asking when the next club meeting was and I made some (ass)umptions about who was running it. I thought one of the Sterling's ran the site? Guess it goes to show how out of the loop I am.
