Well the surgery itself was ok. I was totally knocked out for 5 hours. I had to stay one night and part of the next day in the hospital just to make sure I was alright. The worst part was the vommiting from the drugs and the blood ingestion. It wasn't any help that jaw was rubber-banded shut at the time either. I'm ok now. My cheeks are still a little puffy, I'm getting used to eating soft-foods and not doing BJJ. During the 24 hours after the surgery, you'll wish you hadn't done it. But, it's better to get it corrected then letting it go. My doctor said I would have eventually gotten major headaches from the teeth not fitting into place, not to mention the teeth actually grinding away too. So, my advice is to get it done as soon as possible. The older you get, the longer it will take to heal.

Jaw Surgery...What to do for 6 months?

Guys, been there done that!
I'm 34 now but had the surgery when I was 20. Absolutely a pain in the rear the first but well worth it now. I was locked shut for 4 weeks and it was awful. I must agree, vomitting with your mouth wired shut was the WORST. I freaked when it happened, not knowing what to do but everything was OK once I calmed down. You will lose weight like a dog unless you drink a protein or weight gainer shakes. I drank the Weider weight gainer and still lost 12 lbs. Went from 174 to 162. Don't laugh but baby food also came in handy as it didn't require chewing... ie. potatos, carrots, veggies, etc. I would also be careful what you do as far as athletics. My jaw slipped out of joint after 1 week and I had to have the surgery second time to move it back into place. Take it slow... Trust me, you don't want to go through it twice.
Good luck!

Ok, that is what I needed to know; I'm slightly open bite; but at my age I guess it would be a pain in the ass to correct it. Back when I was a teen my family cannot afforded to correct me. Dental cares here are VERY, VERY expensive. That's the reason because dentist here are the richest surgeons.

I was completely wired shut and I do mean with metal not rubber bands. I had one tooth pulled (now a bridge - dentist now wouldn't have pulled it I'm told) strictly for that reason. That way I could fit a straw through the open space and sip drinks, swish around mouth rinse, etc. When I threw up, thats the only place I had to kind to push out the vomit. It basically sits in your mouth and you just direct it to that area. Really, really nasty. You'll live through it and it just ends up being something you tell your friends just to gross them out.

Really don't know exactly how it slipped out of joint. I truly believed it happened right after the surgery. One side of my jaw was killing me and the other side was just OK. The X-Ray machine at the hospital was down so I was discharged and went the following day to the doctors office for an x-ray there (they thought everything was normal while in the hospital). Thats when they saw it was out of place. I was so swollen in the hospital the only way the could have known was by the X-Ray.

Well, it's been about 4 and a half months since the surgery and everything has went well. I'm wayyy stoked cuz this monday I am making my return to jiu-jitsu, even though the doctor said to wait 6 months hehe. This BJJ rebirth has given me a new goal...
