Good point. Definatley very interesting. His top students where exceptional fighters. His Kodokan team was extremely effective but is also interesting to note that he sent 2 of his top deshi to train with Ueshiba (of aikido). They then stayed with him (at the time he was teaching Daito Ryu JuJutsu i think), One of them defeated all Judo challenges using Aiki JJ techniques, a mpeg of one challenge can be found on Aikidojournal.
I think it was Kenji Tomiki? not sure though.
I am not trying to disparage BJJ or Judo ( i trained in Judo for around 3 years) i am just saying that REAL JuJutsu has the eliments of both arts.
TJJ schools do practace open sparring it is called randori.

However, one must note the Jigoro Kano's Judoka dominated Ju Jitsu schools that trained with kata and one step sparring rather than open practice=all schools.
