  • Too big for muh britches?

    aka Spanky gets political.

    Idaho Senate Bill 1138

  • #2
Well if you were engaged in legal sanctioned fights, then of course i agree with you, but if you were engaged in some type of underground illegal fight club, then the law is the law.

      Jimi,

Did you read the proposed statute?

Yep. But i guess what i meant was there must have been some reason for them to bring forth some type of thing like this and it must have started with some type of questionable activity. And all i was trying to say was that if the activity that was going on was illegal and caused them to take a look at martial arts practice as a whole up there, then something must be way wrong.

There may have been some illegal activity, I cannot say for sure.

This is specifically citing UFC, Tough Man and other recognized organizations BY NAME.

It outlaws everything that involves, and I quote:

11 54-416A. TOUGHMAN, BADMAN OR ULTIMATE FIGHTING COMPETITION PROHIBITED. (1)
12 No professional or amateur toughman, badman or ultimate fighting match, as
13 described in this section, may be held in this state. Such competition
14 includes any contest or exhibition where participants compete by using a com-
15 bination of skills. Such skills may include, but are not limited to, boxing,
16 wrestling, kicking or martial arts skills. Notwithstanding the above, this
17 section shall not preclude kickboxing or mixed martial arts as regulated by
          18 this chapter.
19 (2) Any person participating in or promoting a professional or amateur
20 toughman, badman or ultimate fighting match is guilty of a felony punishable
21 as prescribed by section 18-112, Idaho Code. Additionally, the athletic com-
22 mission may apply to a district court for an injunction against any and all
23 promoters of or participants in a toughman, badman or ultimate fighting match
24 and may request that the court seize all moneys and assets relating to the
25 competition. Any such moneys seized pursuant to this section shall be depos-
26 ited in the general fund.

          It specifically, and comically states:
14 ...where participants compete by using a com-
          15 bination of skills

So that means no boxing AND wrestling techniques. Either or, but not both.

          No walking AND chewing gum.

I believe that this is being driven because someone was killed in the regional 'Tough Man' competition. Wearing headgear and using 16 oz gloves.

It sucks to see people get hurt, and especially killed. But if we are going to make laws to protect the populace you'd better start with the biggest killers: Medical malpractice and automobiles.

What is legally sanctioned today can be illegal tomorrow!

One of the problems of modern ma (in my oppinion) is in many of our dojos and gyms we traded effective trainning for safety(not in all scools of course). Not that safety isnt important, but ther really isnt a good balance between the two. Nobody wants to get a bloody nose in practice or a fat lip, or if my kid slips and falls on a sweaty floor i'm suing attitude. I know it's societal but I've seen in some dojos all they do is katas and pre arranged kumite. I know this wasnt going on in the early days of karate in okinawa. I once watched a judo class that was so intense( these guys where'nt afraid to get a little blood on their uniforms) These guys could decimate all the dojos and gyms I trained at. Anyway I'm starting to ramble on tangents.Sorry.

To get back to the issue. I see the days when we will all be watching the ufc on underground video tapes because it's been totally outlawed. Of course no one will care 'till they start passing laws that effect them. And mr. spanky(for short) I used to be proud of Arizona like you are or were with Idaho. Things have really changed there too. The things I enjoyed doing there while I was growing up (and were legal) now are illegal OR fenced off, cant go here or there , cant pass go or collect 200$.It really ticks me off.

Alright thats it with the politics I promise (for now).
