Just wondering. I have tried shotokan and I think MT goes better with BJJ.

Shotokan techniques aren't so bad - its the forms that I don't agree with. They teach you to be stiff, tense and lock out your punches which is a really bad habit.

Shotokan is supposed to be the art of the one punch, one kill fighting method but this is unattainable unless your a heavyweight, and most (not all) Japanese are not heavyweights.

I think its emphasis on simplicity is good. Its forms stiffness and low stance are questionable.

I think the one punch one kill is something that has been misunderstood, it should be puch "as if" you have to kill with one punch knowing it doesn't but will do the most damage you can

Kyokushin a "big mans karate" has it too but the founder was a heavyweight ( to stay a bit ontopic)

as for the low stances they are a trainingtool that has become so overemphasized that it is now style characteristic
they nag about and inch to the left or right for a trainingstance that was not meant for practical use anyway

Japanese not big? one name, Annnnntoniii Iiinokiii !!!!! (think lady anouncer of Pride saying that name)

People think that Asians are generally smaller, which is statistically correct.

But I have seen and trained with Asians who are a natural 6'1" 190lbs (without weight training).

Actually only a few Asian cultures are small in stature—not so many anymore. It's said that he average American male is between 5'9"-5'11". The average Japanse is around 5'7"-5'9" and the average Chinese around 5'8" and up... The major difference is that Americans have more people that grow beyond 6 feet. Also, we Americans are generally heavier... But for the most part, people are becoming more and more similar in stature.

I'm only 5' 6" and am between 175-180 lbs. and am not considered stocky. I don't have a lot of "excess baggage" , but I am, among other things, a mixed-blood Cherokee (the rest of my ancestory is Scottish and Sotch-Irish. People like to play the "Wheel of Ethnicity" game with me and try to figure out just what the hell I am. ) , and many Native Americans have a more square build.

6'1", 280 lbs. Half caucasian, half Chinese-Hawaiian. I'm considered obese, but I'm fairly solid, not sloppy fat. I took Tae Kwon Do for 6 yrs and looking back on my time in that discipline, I think I should have taken Judo of Jujitsu. Unfortunately, I have a slow metabolism thanks to both cultures and it takes a lot of work to lose the weight and any of you out there who know, the ethnic cuisine wreaks hell on the waistline.

around 6 foot (I think a centimeter smaller but I may have grown since then)

was 166 lbs but now 160 (after two weeks in greece)

I'm suprised at how big everyone here is.
