I have seen many times in fights where the fighters wrap tape or gauze around their hands, what purpose does this serve?

Why do punchers tape their hands?

Now, I'm far from an expert on this, but I'm pretty sure that if you go around punching a heavy bag without anything on your hands, your wrists will be complete mush before long.
The tape is used as protection to keep your wrist straight, and keep everything in working order over long periods of punching.. Also helps a little with form.

On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow
-- Friedrich Nietzsche
^^^What he said. It also serves a similar purpose as a powerlifter's suite. It just keeps things tight giving the hand and wrist support decreasing the chances of something breaking during a fight.

and wouldn't pain correct my form?
I've been hitting the puchingbag barehanded most of the time, except my new bag but that is meant for lowkicks and solid like a rock, most boxingbags aren't like that
now in a match the gloves are filled by it aand the taping makes a hard lump in the gloves so you can hit much harder because of it

i might be thinking about the wrong thing but i thought mits were used, with your coach wearing them and you practicing on them. or are those focus gloves? oh well its late and im tired, and new :P
and i could see how pain would correct your form but theres other ways to correct your form, like practing alot.

Yes, pain will correct your form, but unfortunately, punching a bag bare-handed doesn't really hurt right away..
It slowly crushes ligaments and other such goodies in your wrist, so it doesn't really hurt that much, however, maybe suddenly, or maybe over time, you will experience great pain, because maybe ligaments have been eaten through, or maybe you broke your wrist. And to fix that, it's going to take alot of time and money.. I wouldn't suggest it..
I highly suggest you start wrapping your hands when hitting the bag.

tell me about the pain, if I hit my bags wearing MMA gloves I can hit much harder than barehanded
The thing I shouldn't do anymore is first hitting with those gloves and then take them of and hit barehanded because then I will be hitting the bag way to hard
With mits I meant those gloves that look a bit like ovengloves but then from leather and padded a bit
