  • Muay Thai for older students?

I know MT is very effective and in theory, anyone can studying anything with the right motivation. However, I've been out of MA for about 20 years (now in the mid 40s) and looking to get back in it. I love more traditional styles of MT (vs sport orientated).

Love to hear you thoughts on starting MT training at this age and from those who have done so.

I have people who I train with who do muay thai and who are older in their 40s and 50s, they adjust the training and they do more rest in between to recoup. the old styles are a good option(minus the brainwashing) for some of the people who want to train and not want to fight in the ring or do that type of intensive training.

George, thanks for the reply. I don't mind putting what I learn to the test in the ring and I've managed to keep myself in top shape cardio wise. Wondering more about the ability to take the pounding as one gets older. Do your students in their 50s still compete in the ring?

I didnt see any of the older people compete but they trained hard and were quite capable of handling themselves. I had one friend in his forties, he did an amateur 3 round fight and did well. I am sure you will get some other views on the forum from others who actually teach and probably have some good insight from that. I think muay thai is great and it offers something for everyone on every level so I think anybody who wants to should be able to do it to the level they feel good about.

          Hi all,

I haven't written any for a while but I had to this time.

George, we finally have something to agree on (no offense). Please don't get to upset, this isn't my intention.

if you feel like you want to, go for it. Find a suitable place by checking them. I just would like to recommend to stay out of competition things. Get up to the speed and ask guys from your club to box a little harder if you feel like this.
          Good luck
