Anybody here worked as the padded-up, big helmet wearing guy in any SD program?

I took three Impact classes...they were helpful in some ways but EXTREMELY limited in others. I took unarmed single assailant, Armed single assailant, and Multiple unarmed assailants. Never got to the multiple armed assailant class, but I'd probably go to the experts--aka Atienza Kali--for that...

I know in order to be a "mugger" you have to take a LOT of classes to get specialized training--lots of hours.

One of my teachers is an Impact "mugger", you can check out his web page at http://www.alloutdefense.com/ I've known Kevin for over ten years, and he is one of the nicest most approachable guys I've ever met. I'm sure he could answer all your questions.

You may also want to look into Fightback.

i have done h2h training. i think a lot of the padding would take away from the training unless you were attacked by a fat guy...or a knight in full armor..
I would say that if you have a traditionalmartialarts back ground only that you take some military h2h with emphsis on sentery removal ect study how to assalt people and refer back to high school and college football tacklingthey are very effective assault techniques...unlessyou attack your traing partners with effective techniques you are doing an injustice to them
the odds against being attacked by some with a sentry removaltechnique are rather slim while the chances of running into a say former linebacker or defensive lineman or back are a lot greater though i have not seen too much training on defending against these techniques

Have you ever USED a sentry removal technique? Jesus Christ, you don't use those in self-defense. First of all, sentry removal takes place usually from behind an UNAWARE opponent, and involves (in my experience) either a knife, or a take down and repeated knifehands to the throat until dead (Marine Corps Close Combat and HtH Fighting).

You can't use those on an opponent facing you that's in warrior stance.

And you need to remember legal action. If you go into a court and say you were justified in slitting the guy's throat from behind him, they'll laugh your ass straight into jail.

Stick to the simple, people. Combat is like a piece of machinery; the more complex you make it, the easy it is to break.

              a misunderstanding?

I beleive you have a misunderstanding of the intent of my post. my intent was that defence against such techniques (obviously if unprepared and the attacker drives a knife into the kidneys then either the base of the scull or cuts the throat you are S.O.L. and no amount of any training will do much good) back to my intent was that instructors use variations of those techniques to prepare studens to defend against them not to use them themselves as for someone using true combatives in self defence i totaly agree. Use of deadly force rules totaly apply. as for my background i have used modified versions of said techniques though the objective was to subdue and restrain. I was a GMG2 in the navy and a range master so i am totaly familar with use of deady force

I studied knife-fighting for a long time... reaching the medualla requires you to be behind the victim. You can reach the kidneys from in front if you're familiar with the reverse grip of a knife.

Your biggest problem with knife defense is... well... defending against the knife. For a battle-trained soldier, it's not as hard.

But for a civilian, a face-to-face encounter with a knife is truly terrifying. I'm wary of 'knife-fighters' that have a lot of studio training, but no experience. Until you've faced a knife, you can't say that you know how to defend against one.

While you raise points about demonstrating those techniques to learn how to counter them, remember that your average Joe Street Thug doesn't stab for the lumbar vertabrae, the kidneys, or the medulla oblongata. Those are Special Ops targets, taught to SEAL teams and Marines. Not a thug on the street.

Your average punk doesn't carry his knife in reverse grip, and if he does, he's either thinking that he's cool like the guys in the movies, or he's got some training that you probably don't want to face.

I know how to do all these techniques, as well as many other locations that you can use a knife on to paralyze limbs, but this is beyond the scope of women's self defense.

                Fin.
