I hate my gi - what do you wear for class? By mijemi - Sat, 10 Feb 2007 08:02:36 GMT

    =========

My gi is huge which I don't mind for the pants but I'm finding the top is really uncomfortable. I also have to wear a top underneath (which is soo hot) because the jacket just doesn't stay put - it's always gaping at the front and slipping off my shoulders during warm up. Obviously I'm going to have to buy a new one but I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to do that yet. Do you think a smaller size will do the trick or are they all just not very suitable for women?
What do you wear for class and do you like it?

Ummm not sure if its a karate gi, or a gi like.. bjj or judo type gi.. (heavier).

If its BJJ, Judo, etc... and its too big, put it in the dryer.... I'd say put it in for.. 5 minutes, take it out, and see if its good, than if its not, put it in again.

You can shrink down Gi's with this quite easily, and it works TREMENDOUSLY fast, just dont make it too small lol.

Heaven knows the tops and bottoms don't seem to be made for the same size...

First, there are a number of good athletic type tops made out of the new materials, they are actually pleasant to wear under the jacket.

Next, consider sewing a small hook to the inside of the top, available in the notions section at most stores. A few simple stitches and you are set. It might not be all traditional, but it beats 'standing out in the open' and having to re arrange your uniform all the time.

Century Martial Arts supply carries a ghi made specially for women, it has a longer, tapered jacket. and the pants and made for women as well.

It depends on the martial arts you do. If you train in a realistic martial art, you should be wearing trakkie bottoms, shorts etc

Gis are okay if you are doing BJJ. But I really don't agree wiuth the whole gis in karate, tae kwon do, etc

what are trakkie bottoms? I like gi bottoms because of the triple seam, so you don't rip out your crotch when your kicking to the face;-)

"Take a look at what I'm wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? Forget about it."

                  First - that is disturbing...

Second - there are a couple of things to consider when purchasing a new gi. What you are practicing is probably the most relevant. You don't want a heavy gi for striking arts, you don't want a light gi for grappling/throwing arts.

I would recomend checking out mma.tv. There is a button that says "Help me find..." Click on the "Gear" and then "Kimonos" button. It will take you to a listing of stores that sell various types of Gis. If you search around for long enough I'm sure you can find something that suites you.

If price is an issue - I'd try to avoid some of the more known brands (Atama, for example) because they over chrage. I don't like paying for a name. I'm actually about to buy a new gi from Sirius and you can check them out.

As for the shirt thing - I know what you mean. The best thing to do is get a good set of under armor. It really does make a HUGE difference from wearing a T-shirt under your Gi. I wore a T-shirt or tank top under my gi for the first two years I trained. After my first experience with udner armor (and it doesn't have to be name brand either - they sell equivalents much cheaper at Wal-mart. They wear out faster, but they are cheaper) I don't think I ever put on a T-shirt again. I even have a long sleeve that I like better than my short sleeves (I'm sure it is because my skin isn't rubbing on the hard gi).

That bloke in the photo with the trousers... Isn't that meant to be insulting to the American flag (especially if he falls over and the flag is touching the ground). Im British and that even offends me!

I don't think so, Red Rum. I think if anything we (stereotypical americans, not my own personal views) probably view it as "Patriotic"...

Not only would I not wear a flag (and I do believe it is against the rules concerning flags) because of the possible insinuations, but also because it just looks tacky.
