    Getting females into class By bigfootsquatch - Fri, 28 Sep 2007 15:21:35 GMT

    =========

    Any advice, as most probably know, most martial art classes have a large majority of males in the classroom. With all the female martial artists here, I wanted to ask:

    What do women look for in a martial arts class?
    self defense, health, social setting, energy outlet, specialty self defense classes like rape prevention or something of the sort?

    Thanks everyone

    How about other women?

    The majority of women like to do things in women-friendly environments. You will rarely see a lady step into the boxing gym on her own (and if she does, she's one helluva lady!).

    Start off with a cardio kick-box class that finishes with two or three self defense drills (pad-related) where the woman is blocking, parrying, checking and counter firing punches and kicks.

    Teach 'em to hit and hit hard!!!

      Nice, cleanish facilities...and that is not just restricted to the facilities pleasent friendly atmosphere...the cardio/jazzercise stuff draws the flies (I hate it... but I am not typical noway...)

      The armbars/wristlock SD type things are always fun and cause much delight...

        i wouldnt personally change anything. id treat men and women thesame, if they want to train turn up, i couldnt care less if women trained or not. everyone gets treated the same in my opinion. not going to make a nice clean changing room just so they feel happy.

                Hey man, give the guy a break! Ghosts have trouble getting women into class, because.....well they're scary. And when ghosts try to hold pads (if he can pick them up with the sheet) the sheet keeps getting knocked off...

                        To make the dojo accessable to anyone there should be decency and respect with the students, why should women expect something else? They want equal treatment, right? So does that imply that a dojo should change for their sake? If they can deal with the dojo the way it is, great - if they can't, perhaps they shouldn't be there.
