  • Complete Newbie, Which Direction Do I take?

    Hi all,

I have decided to take up a form of martial arts... (good start eh!)

I am interested in kick boxing (mainly because it is something I have heard of).

After buying a Bill Wallace DVD this seems like a good direction to take.

Have you got any suggestions for my next step, any mistakes that I should avoid and generally what I should do?

    Cheers
    Chris

    Welcome!

This is ALWAYS a question/request by newcomers.

The slesction of a martial art is the same as anything-

    Personal Choice/Preference

If you had not tried different foods, such as for example, tripe, you cannot fully take in advice or information from someone who had.

However unlike a auto. Purchasing has many outside influences, relatives, price, availability, etc. But color, or other options become Personal Choice/Preference.

I always advise to go to a martial art that is close and affordable. JUST DO IT.
In time, if others open or are nearby, try them also.

Not everyome loves the taste of a peanut butter/banana/baloney sandwich.

I train at a place that does full MMA training and most of the trainers there want you to start with boxing, then move to kickboxing and then moving to jiu jitsu. At that point you would be training all three at the same time during the week.

This approach makes sense because there are only so many positions/punches to learn, where as kickboxing would have more.

Welcome to the group! Have you watched any grappeling (UFC, Pride) or are you just interested in stand up? (Point sparring, or K1)
