  • Question from Newbie.

    I took Hapkido classes for about 6 months a long time ago, and have recently been in a few aikido classes. I have a question for all of you. I would be very interested in finding a martial art/studio that was right for me. I quit take those aikido classes because the master instructor was a little too strict and kept speaking japanese. I don't want to learn another language or be in an atmosphere that is ultra-traditional. I like Aikido for it's philosophy and techniques but I didn't like the ultra traditional approach. I am also looking into Wing Chun but again, I don't want the ultra-traditional approach. Because of this I have also looked into Muay Thai/JuJitsu classes (it's a combination class, also teaches some Kali). I don't mind being formal, I just don't want to be uncomfortable and have to spend money/time learning a bunch of stuff I will never use and am not interested in (ie. language, traditions, etc.etc.). Does anyone here have any suggestions?

    What are your goals in terms of fitness, self-defense, level of one to one time with instructor, and feelings about contact?

    If you are looking for fitness and self-defense, wing chun would be ok. JKD, Muaythai (non-competitive), judo and BJJ would be really good. Phillipino arts are good with weapons and self-defense.

    If you are looking for competitive sports, some self-defense and superior conditioning go with boxing, competitive kick boxing or wrestling or judo. Boxing is a great compliment for muay thai or BJJ as is wrestling.

    If you are looking for fitness alone - TKD, Wushu or cardio kickbox.

      Funny, in the other post you said you took HKD for 2 years. 6 mos, 2 years its all the same, right?
