  • Question regarding developing muscular endurance vs. muscular strength

Okay, I am trying to get up to that 100 pushups mark (where you can do 100 straight pushups). I know that is a decent amount of muscular endurance for the arm muscles. However, I also want to be able to strength train good.

So my question is, should I train one, then the other, switching back and forth every few weeks? I read in an article by Pavel, where he says to rotate weight training with pushups every two weeks (so two weeks weights then two weeks pushups and so forth). Should I do that to "simulatenously" build strength and endurance in my arms, or can one do pushups and weight training pretty much at the same time and still get results for both?

According to Pavel in his article, if you do both it will confuse the body, but I mean I am sure people like Army Rangers and so forth (guys with large physiques) are also plenty capable of lots of pushups, so I am sure they must both weight train and do pushups and other calisthenics all the time.

But then again, I am no Ranger or elite soldier right now, so you get my drift I suppose. Any help appreciated. At the moment, I am just following the "two weeks pushups/two weeks weights" method at the moment. But I love weight training, so if I can still do it all the time (and get results), I'd like to.

I am not sure I can truly answer your question. I would just say that you should work towards your goal. If what you want to do is get to 100 push-ups, keep working towards getting to 100 push-ups.

If Pavel is saying to do the rotation thing, you should do that and I reckon you'll be just fine.

    Take care,

    FS.

Why not actually try it before doing it? Pushups aren't that tough bro. Do a max set of pushups before or after a workout, or right when you wake up, or before you go to bed. Don't think too much bro, everyone's body works differently. Keep a log and notice the patterns in which your body works. Pavel is an expert when it comes lifting, but he's not an expert when it comes to your own body. So JUST DO IT.

Hmmm, yeah, good idea I suppose. I actually just did that yesterday (max set of pushups before some hard benching. I will see how it all works. Thanks for the advice you two.

Endurance can be increased naturally through strength training, but endurance training will not increase strength.
